TLDR
In addition to its role in the early phase of defense, innate immunity in mammals appears to play a key role in stimulating the subsequent, clonal response of adaptive immunity.Abstract:
The concept of innate immunity refers to the first-line host defense that serves to limit infection in the early hours after exposure to microorganisms. Recent data have highlighted similarities between pathogen recognition, signaling pathways, and effector mechanisms of innate immunity in Drosophila and mammals, pointing to a common ancestry of these defenses. In addition to its role in the early phase of defense, innate immunity in mammals appears to play a key role in stimulating the subsequent, clonal response of adaptive immunity.read more

TL;DR: It is suggested that plasmacytoid dendritic cells play an important role in IFN-α production during VZV infection through TLR9-dependent and -independent pathways.

In vivo recognition of mannosylated proteins by hepatic mannose receptors and mannan-binding protein
Praneet Opanasopit,Keiko Shirashi,Makiya Nishikawa,Fumiyoshi Yamashita,Yoshinobu Takakura,Mitsuru Hashida +5 more
TL;DR: Comparisons obtained here are due to the unique arrangement of carbohydrate recognition domains on each mannose-specific lectin available for mannosylated ligand recognition, which suggests that the in vivo recognition of MBP has a stronger cluster effect than that of mannosed receptors.

Two host gut-derived lactic acid bacteria activate the proPO system and increase resistance to an AHPND-causing strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei.
TL;DR: Findings suggest that administration of L. plantarum and L. lactis could modulate the immune system and increase shrimp resistance to VPAHPND infection presumably via upregulation of the two LvproPO transcripts.

Short-Form Bomanins Mediate Humoral Immunity in Drosophila.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the Boms function in Drosophila humoral immunity, mediating the killing of the fungal pathogen Candida glabrata in an in vitro assay of cell-free hemolymph and the level of antifungal activity both in vivo and in vitro is linked to thelevel of Bom gene expression.

The functional genomics of CD14 and its role in IgE responses: An integrated view
TL;DR: In this article, some of the most powerful approaches that have been devised to provide a mechanistic explanation for the effects of genetic variation on the regulation of gene expression and function are discussed.

TL;DR: The mammalian Tlr4 protein has been adapted primarily to subserve the recognition of LPS and presumably transduces the LPS signal across the plasma membrane.

CD14, a receptor for complexes of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and LPS binding protein.
TL;DR: CD14, a differentiation antigen of monocytes, was found to bind complexes of LPS and LBP, and blockade of CD14 with monoclonal antibodies prevented synthesis of TNF-alpha by whole blood incubated with LPS.

The Dorsoventral Regulatory Gene Cassette spätzle/Toll/cactus Controls the Potent Antifungal Response in Drosophila Adults
TL;DR: It is shown that mutations in the Toll signaling pathway dramatically reduce survival after fungal infection and the intracellular components of the dorsoventral signaling pathway and the extracellular Toll ligand, spätzle, control expression of the antifungal peptide gene drosomycin in adults.
