Journal ArticleDOI
Interruption of motor cortical discharge subserving aimed arm movements
TL;DR: Observing changes in single cell activity in the motor cortex of monkeys found that this activity was interrupted following a shift of the target during the reaction or movement time and replaced by the pattern activity related to the movement towards the new target.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human transforming growth factor-alpha stimulates bone resorption in vitro.
Paula H. Stern,Nancy S. Krieger,Robert A. Nissenson,Richard D. Williams,Marjorie E. Winkler,Rik Derynck,Gordon J Strewler +6 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that human TGF-alpha is a potent bone-resorbing agent, and support the concept that this growth factor exhibits some effects distinct from those of EGF, and could play an etiologic role in the hypercalcemia of malignancy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, and lead on gene expression regulated by a battery of 13 different promoters in recombinant HepG2 cells.
Douglas B. Tully,Bradley J. Collins,J Diane Overstreet,Cynthia S. Smith,Gregg E. Dinse,Moiz Mumtaz,Robert E. Chapin +6 more
TL;DR: Metal activation of gene expression through several previously unreported signal transduction pathways are shown, including As(V) induction of GST Ya, FOS, XRE, NFkBRE, GADD153, p53RE, and CRE promoters, and thus suggest new insights into the biochemical mechanisms of toxicity and carcinogenicity of metals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Role of intestinal bacterial overgrowth in ethanol production and metabolism in rats
TL;DR: A considerable amount of ethanol is oxidized in the gastrointestinal lumen of rats with a blind-loop, and the resulting high concentrations of acetaldehyde, both in the intestinal lumen and the portal blood, may have deleterious effects on the gastrointestinal mucosa and the liver.
