The work function of the elements and its periodicity
TLDR
In the data for the 63 elements, trends that occur simultaneously in both the columns and the rows of the periodic table are shown to be useful in predicting correct values and also for identifying questionable data.Abstract:
A new compilation, based on a literature search for the period 1969–1976, is made of experimental data on the work function. For these 44 elements, preferred values are selected on the basis of valid experimental conditions. Older values, which are widely accepted, are given for 19 other elements on which there is no recent literature, and are so identified. In the data for the 63 elements, trends that occur simultaneously in both the columns and the rows of the periodic table are shown to be useful in predicting correct values and also for identifying questionable data. Several illustrative examples are given, including verifications of predictions published in 1950.read more

Electronic structure and related properties of Pd/TiAl membranes
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that a number of four surface layers is sufficient to get a converged work function and surface energy for both fcc Pd and L10 TiAl, and the Alterminated (100) and (110) TiAl surfaces possess lower surface energies than other surface configurations.

Tunable Work Function of MgxZn1-xO as a Viable Friction Material for a Triboelectric Nanogenerator
TL;DR: A magnetron sputtered Mg xZn1- xO film is developed as a viable friction material that rubs against polydimethylsiloxane in a TENG and can be effectively tuned by varying Mg composition, x, and exposed surface facets, which dominate the charge-transfer behavior.

TL;DR: These pseudopotentials and companion basis sets optimized for lanthanides will enable larger-scale density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of lanthanide molecules in either gas or condensed phases, as well as of solid state lanthanid-containing materials, allowing to further explore the chemical and physical properties of Lanthanide systems.

TL;DR: In this article, the work functions of the bulk crystals and of silver films formed upon them by auto-epitaxy were determined photoelectrically, and the results support the Smoluchowski correlation of work function with surface atom density.

Work Functions of the Elements
TL;DR: The work function φ is a periodic function of atomic number, as shown clearly by a new compilation of published data for 57 elements as mentioned in this paper, and the progressive rise and fall of work function values throughout the table of the elements appears to be sufficiently regular to permit approximations to be made of values for the metallic and semimetallic elements on which no data has yet been published.
