The work function of the elements and its periodicity
TLDR
In the data for the 63 elements, trends that occur simultaneously in both the columns and the rows of the periodic table are shown to be useful in predicting correct values and also for identifying questionable data.Abstract:
A new compilation, based on a literature search for the period 1969–1976, is made of experimental data on the work function. For these 44 elements, preferred values are selected on the basis of valid experimental conditions. Older values, which are widely accepted, are given for 19 other elements on which there is no recent literature, and are so identified. In the data for the 63 elements, trends that occur simultaneously in both the columns and the rows of the periodic table are shown to be useful in predicting correct values and also for identifying questionable data. Several illustrative examples are given, including verifications of predictions published in 1950.read more

Formation and Diffusion of Metal Impurities in Perovskite Solar Cell Material CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 : Implications on Solar Cell Degradation and Choice of Electrode.
TL;DR: A comprehensive study of formation energetics and diffusion dynamics of a number of noble and transition metal impurities in MAPbI3 uncovered important general trends of impurity formation and diffusion and provide useful guidance for identifying the optimal metal electrodes that do not introduce electrically active impurity defects in MAP bI3 while having low resistivities and suitable work functions for carrier extraction.

Dependence of the Work Function of TiO2 (Rutile) on Crystal Faces, Studied by a Scanning Auger Microprobe
TL;DR: In this article, the work functions for atomic-level regulated (HF-treated and annealed) n-TiO2 (110) and (100) surfaces with a clear step and terrace structure, together with photo-etched ones, were investigated with a scanning auger microprobe (SAM) using 0.05 wt % Nb-doped TiO2.

GaInN light-emitting diodes with RuO2/SiO2/Ag omni-directional reflector
TL;DR: In this paper, a GaInN light-emitting diode (LED) employing an omni-directional reflector (ODR) is presented, which consists of a RuO2 ohmic contact to p-type GaN, a quarter-wave thick SiO2 low-index layer perforated by an array of micro-contacts, and an Ag layer.

Rational design of self-supported Cu@WC core-shell mesoporous nanowires for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction
Mengqi Yao,Bojun Wang,Baolong Sun,Linfei Luo,Yunjian Chen,Jianwei Wang,Ni Wang,Ni Wang,Sridhar Komarneni,Xiaobin Niu,Wencheng Hu +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, the lattice mismatch between WC and Cu modifies the atomic and electronic structures of WC and weakens the hydrogen bond during absorption leading to enhanced HER performance, which provides a deep insight into the WC-based core-shell catalysts for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

TL;DR: In this article, the work functions of the bulk crystals and of silver films formed upon them by auto-epitaxy were determined photoelectrically, and the results support the Smoluchowski correlation of work function with surface atom density.

Work Functions of the Elements
TL;DR: The work function φ is a periodic function of atomic number, as shown clearly by a new compilation of published data for 57 elements as mentioned in this paper, and the progressive rise and fall of work function values throughout the table of the elements appears to be sufficiently regular to permit approximations to be made of values for the metallic and semimetallic elements on which no data has yet been published.
