Using Self-Report Assessment Methods to Explore Facets of Mindfulness

Mindfulness facets were shown to be differentially correlated in expected ways with several other constructs and to have incremental validity in the prediction of psychological symptoms.
Abstract
The authors examine the facet structure of mindfulness using five recently developed mindfulness questionnaires. Two large samples of undergraduate students completed mindfulness questionnaires and measures of other constructs. Psychometric properties of the mindfulness questionnaires were examined, including internal consistency and convergent and discriminant relationships with other variables. Factor analyses of the combined pool of items from the mindfulness questionnaires suggested that collectively they contain five clear, interpretable facets of mindfulness. Hierarchical confirmatory factor analyses suggested that at least four of the identified factors are components of an overall mindfulness construct and that the factor structure of mindfulness may vary with meditation experience. Mindfulness facets were shown to be differentially correlated in expected ways with several other constructs and to have incremental validity in the prediction of psychological symptoms. Findings suggest that conceptualizing mindfulness as a multifaceted construct is helpful in understanding its components and its relationships with other variables.

The Relation Between the Five Facets of Mindfulness and Worry in a Non-clinical Sample

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the association between the five facets of mindfulness, established by previous research, and symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), including nonreactivity to inner experience, nonjudgement of inner experience and acting with awareness.

Clarity of mind: Structural equation modeling of associations between dispositional mindfulness, self-concept clarity and psychological well-being.

TL;DR: Results from this study indicate that self-concept clarity mediates the relationship between dispositional mindfulness and psychological well-being, with the mindful tendencies to act with awareness and remain non-judgmental identified as most closely linked with self- Concept clarity and psychologicalWell-being.

Mindfulness‐Based Awareness and Compassion: Predictors of Counselor Empathy and Anxiety

TL;DR: In this paper, mindfulness-based awareness and compassion were examined as predictors of empathy and anxiety among 152 master's-level counseling interns, and the results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis supported that awareness-awareness and compassion differentially contributed to explaining the variance in counselor empathy.

Measuring Mindfulness in Youth: Review of Current Assessments, Challenges, and Future Directions

TL;DR: In this article, a review identifies existing youth mindfulness measures, discusses key challenges to measurement, and offers suggestions for improving assessment research, concluding that the effects of mindfulness training with youth are tempered by methodological issues.

Washing Dishes to Wash the Dishes: Brief Instruction in an Informal Mindfulness Practice

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated whether washing dishes could be used as an informal contemplative practice, promoting the state of mindfulness along with attendant emotional and attentional phenomena, and found that participants receiving mindful dishwashing instruction would evidence greater state mindfulness, attentional awareness, and positive affect, as well as reduce negative affect and lead to overestimation of time spent dishwashing.

Alternative Ways of Assessing Model Fit

TL;DR: In this paper, two types of error involved in fitting a model are considered, error of approximation and error of fit, where the first involves the fit of the model, and the second involves the model's shape.

Comparative fit indexes in structural models

TL;DR: A new coefficient is proposed to summarize the relative reduction in the noncentrality parameters of two nested models and two estimators of the coefficient yield new normed (CFI) and nonnormed (FI) fit indexes.

The Benefits of Being Present: Mindfulness and Its Role in Psychological Well-Being

TL;DR: Correlational, quasi-experimental, and laboratory studies show that the MAAS measures a unique quality of consciousness that is related to a variety of well-being constructs, that differentiates mindfulness practitioners from others, and that is associated with enhanced self-awareness.
