Visualization of coronary atherosclerotic plaques in patients using optical coherence tomography: comparison with intravascular ultrasound.

TLDR
Comparison between OCT and histology demonstrated that lipid-rich plaques and fibrous plaques have distinct OCT characteristics, and intracoronary OCT appears to be feasible and safe.

From vulnerable plaque to vulnerable patient: a call for new definitions and risk assessment strategies: Part II.

Morteza Naghavi, +63 more
- 07 Oct 2003 -
TL;DR: The term "vulnerable patient" may be more appropriate and is proposed now for the identification of subjects with high likelihood of developing cardiac events in the near future and a quantitative method for cumulative risk assessment of vulnerable patients needs to be developed.

Characterization of Human Atherosclerosis by Optical Coherence Tomography

TL;DR: Objective OCT criteria are highly sensitive and specific for characterizing different types of atherosclerotic plaques in vitro and will provide a basis for the interpretation of intracoronary OCT images obtained from patients.

Optical coherence tomography for ultrahigh resolution in vivo imaging

TL;DR: Optical coherence tomography functions as a type of 'optical biopsy' to provide cross-sectional images of tissue structure on the micron scale and is a promising imaging technology because it can provide images of tissues in situ and in real time, without the need for excision and processing of specimens.

Lessons From Sudden Coronary Death A Comprehensive Morphological Classification Scheme for Atherosclerotic Lesions

TL;DR: This review will reconsider the current paradigm for understanding the critical, final steps in the progression of atherosclerotic lesions, and devise a simpler classification scheme that is consistent with the AHA categories but is easier to use, able to deal with a wide array of morphological variations, and not overly burdened by mechanistic implications.

Plaque rupture with severe pre-existing stenosis precipitating coronary thrombosis. Characteristics of coronary atherosclerotic plaques underlying fatal occlusive thrombi.

Erling Falk
- 01 Aug 1983 -
TL;DR: A severe chronic stenosis seems to be a prerequisite for occlusive thrombus formation, but the thrombotic process itself is triggered by an acute intimal lesion.

Catheter-based radiotherapy to inhibit restenosis after coronary stenting

TL;DR: In this preliminary, short-term study of patients with previous coronary restenosis, coronary stenting followed by catheter-based intracoronary radiotherapy substantially reduced the rate of subsequent restenotic.

Optical Coherence Tomography for Optical Biopsy Properties and Demonstration of Vascular Pathology

TL;DR: OCT represents a promising new technology for imaging vascular microstructure with a level of resolution not previously achieved with the use of other imaging modalities, and can be performed with a catheter integrated with a relatively inexpensive optical fiber.

The Unstable Atheroma

TL;DR: It is proposed that the basic biology of the unstable lesion will now assume even greater importance for two fundamental reasons: first, even with aspirin and cholesterol-lowering therapy, acute vascular events will continue to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries.
