Linguistic discrimination in writing assessment: How raters react to African American “errors,” ESL errors, and standard English errors on a state-mandated writing exam

TL;DR: Using a log-linear model to generate odds ratios for comparison of essays with these error types, results indicate linguistic discrimination against African American “errors" and a leniency for ESL errors in writing assessment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Conceptual design of the tangentially viewing combined interferometer-polarimeter for ITER density measurements

TL;DR: Simulations of performance for a projected ITER baseline discharge show the TIP diagnostic will function as well as, or better than, comparable existing systems for feedback density control and that finite temperature effects will be significant in ITER even for moderate temperature plasmas and can lead to a significant underestimate of electron density.
Journal ArticleDOI

Increased progression to kidney fibrosis after erythropoietin is used as a treatment for acute kidney injury

TL;DR: Although rhEPO was protective of renal function and structure in acute kidney injury, the supraphysiological dose needed for renoprotection contributed to fibrogenesis and stimulated chronic kidney disease in the long term.
Journal ArticleDOI

Climate change is likely to severely limit the effectiveness of deep-sea ABMTs in the North Atlantic

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on climate change impacts likely to affect these areas and the need to evaluate implications for the state of biodiversity features for which they have been established, and advocate a more precautionary approach, potentially setting aside more extensive areas and strictly limiting human uses and/or adopting high protection thresholds before any additional human use impacts are allowed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reliability of sleep log data versus actigraphy in veterans with sleep disturbance and PTSD.

TL;DR: The data strongly suggest that sleep logs do not reproduce actigraphic records in patients with PTSD even though the sleep logs were reliably quantified.
