Journal ArticleDOI
An ancestral oomycete locus contains late blight avirulence gene Avr3a, encoding a protein that is recognized in the host cytoplasm
Miles R. Armstrong,Stephen C. Whisson,Leighton Pritchard,Leighton Pritchard,Jorunn I. B. Bos,Eduard Venter,Anna O. Avrova,Anne P. Rehmany,Ulrike Böhme,Karen Brooks,Inna Cherevach,N. Hamlin,Brian White,Audrey Fraser,Angela Lord,Michael A. Quail,Carol Churcher,Neil Hall,Matthew Berriman,Sanwen Huang,Sophien Kamoun,Jim Beynon,Paul R. J. Birch +22 more
TL;DR: The oomycete Phytophthora infestans causes late blight, the potato disease that precipitated the Irish famines in 1846 and 1847, and it is suggested that Avr3a has undergone gene duplication and that an allele evading recognition by R3a arose under positive selection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Involvement of cathepsin B in the plant disease resistance hypersensitive response
Eleanor M. Gilroy,Ingo Hein,Renier A. L. van der Hoorn,Petra C. Boevink,Eduard Venter,Hazel McLellan,Hazel McLellan,Florian Kaffarnik,Katarina Hrubikova,Jane Shaw,Maria C. Holeva,Eduardo C. López,Orlando Borrás-Hidalgo,Leighton Pritchard,Gary J. Loake,Christophe Lacomme,Christophe Lacomme,Paul R. J. Birch +17 more
TL;DR: In this article, using protease inhibitors and virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS), the authors demonstrate that the plant papain cysteine protease cathepsin B is required for the disease resistance hypersensitive response (HR).
Journal ArticleDOI
Profiling and quantifying differential gene transcription in Phytophthora infestans prior to and during the early stages of potato infection.
TL;DR: Real-time RT-PCR was used to quantify the expression of 18 transcripts originating from germinating cysts, relative to the constitutively expressed actB gene, in vegetative mycelium, germinated cysts and at three time-points post-inoculation of potato cultivar Bintje.
Journal ArticleDOI
Is photosynthetic transcriptional regulation in Triticum aestivum L. cv. ‘TugelaDN’ a contributing factor for tolerance to Diuraphis noxia (Homoptera: Aphididae)?
Anna-Maria Botha,Anna-Maria Botha,Lynelle Lacock,Chantal van Niekerk,M. Thuto Matsioloko,Franco B. du Preez,Shilo Loots,Eduard Venter,Karl J. Kunert,Christopher A. Cullis +9 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that plants co-ordinately regulate gene expression when attacked by RWA, and suggest that the ability to maintain photosynthetic function with resultant energy production is one of the determining factors ensuring the survival of the resistant varieties when coping with the RWA feeding.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The practical and scientific argument in support of a Fusarium that includes the FSSC and several other basal lineages is reasserted, consistent with the longstanding use of this name among plant pathologists, medical mycologists, quarantine officials, regulatory agencies, students and researchers with a stake in its taxonomy.
