Journal ArticleDOI

Enteroendocrine cells sense bacterial tryptophan catabolites to activate enteric and vagal neuronal pathways

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used real-time measurements of enteroendocrine cells (EECs) and found that the bacteria Edwardsiella tarda activate EECs through the receptor transient receptor potential ankyrin A1 (Trpa1) and increase intestinal motility.
Journal ArticleDOI

Catecholate Siderophores Protect Bacteria from Pyochelin Toxicity

TL;DR: It is shown that the catecholate siderophore enterobactin protects E. coli against the toxic effects of pyochelin by reducing ROS, which supports the idea that sidersophores can have physiological roles aside from those in iron acquisition.
Journal ArticleDOI

Identification and characterization of small molecule inhibitors of Plasmodium falciparum dihydroorotate dehydrogenase.

TL;DR: Using a target-based high throughput screen, a series of potent, species-specific inhibitors of P. falciparum DHOD are identified and validated as an antimalarial drug target and provide chemical scaffolds with which to begin medicinal chemistry efforts.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and biosynthesis of borophycin, a new Boeseken complex of boric acid from a marine strain of the blue-green alga Nostoc linckia

TL;DR: The lipophilic extract of a marine strain of Nostoc Zinckia (Roth) Bornet ex Bomet & Flahault (UH isolate GA-5-23) was found to display appreciable cytotoxicity against LoVo and KB, two human tumor cell lines used routinely in the laboratory for screening.
