Journal ArticleDOI
Star Clusters Across Cosmic Time
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review observations and theoretical models for star clusters and show that star clusters stand at the intersection of modern astrophysics: the ISM, gravitational dynamics, stellar evolution, and cosmology.
Journal ArticleDOI
The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: galaxy luminosity functions per spectral type
Darren Madgwick,Ofer Lahav,Ivan K. Baldry,Carlton M. Baugh,Joss Bland-Hawthorn,Terry J. Bridges,Russell D. Cannon,Shaun Cole,Matthew Colless,Chris A. Collins,Warrick J. Couch,Gavin Dalton,Roberto De Propris,Simon P. Driver,George Efstathiou,Richard S. Ellis,Carlos S. Frenk,Karl Glazebrook,Carole Jackson,Ian Lewis,Stuart Lumsden,Stephen J. Maddox,Peder Norberg,John A. Peacock,Bruce A. Peterson,William J. Sutherland,Keith Taylor +26 more
TL;DR: In this article, the optical bJ luminosity function of the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) was calculated for different subsets defined by their spectral properties.
Journal ArticleDOI
The GALAH Survey: Second Data Release
Sven Buder,Sven Buder,Martin Asplund,Ly Duong,Janez Kos,Karin Lind,Karin Lind,Melissa Ness,Melissa Ness,Sanjib Sharma,Joss Bland-Hawthorn,Joss Bland-Hawthorn,Andrew R. Casey,Gayandhi M. Zinn,Maruša Žerjal +53 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the GALAH second public data release (GALAH DR2) containing 342 682 stars and use the physics-driven spectrum synthesis of Spectroscopy Made Easy (SME) to derive stellar labels.
Journal ArticleDOI
ARGOS - III. Stellar populations in the Galactic bulge of the Milky Way
Melissa Ness,Kenneth C. Freeman,E. Athanassoula,E. Wylie-de-Boer,Joss Bland-Hawthorn,Martin Asplund,Geraint F. Lewis,David Yong,Rebecca Lane,László L. Kiss,László L. Kiss,László L. Kiss +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the metallicity results from the ARGOS spectroscopic survey of the Galactic bulge and propose that the stars with [Fe/H] ≥ 0.5 are part of the boxy/peanut bar/bulge.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Large-Scale Bipolar Wind in the Galactic Center
Joss Bland-Hawthorn,Martin Cohen +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an open-ended bipolar model, when viewed in projection in the near field, provides the most natural explanation for the observed loop structure, and the derived energies for the bipolar wind are of the order of 1055 ergs, in line with the energy requirement of the MSX observations.
