Screaton,Uma Shankar,Srisharan Shreedharan,Evan A. Solomon,X. Wang,H.-Y. Wu,Ingo Pecher,Leah J. LeVay,Iodp Expedition Scientists +53 more
TL;DR: Observations suggest that SSEs and associated slow earthquake phenomena are promoted by lithological, mechanical, and frictional heterogeneity within the fault zone, enhanced by geometric complexity associated with subduction of rough crust.
Journal ArticleDOI
Submarine slope failures due to pipe structure formation.
TL;DR: New reflection seismic data from the Arctic Ocean and numerical modelling results supporting a different link between hydrates and slope stability are presented, showing that overpressure at the gas hydrate stability zone leads to potential destabilization of the slope and submarine landslides.
Journal ArticleDOI
From gradual spreading to catastrophic collapse - Reconstruction of the 1888 Ritter Island volcanic sector collapse from high-resolution 3D seismic data
Jens Karstens,Christian Berndt,Morelia Urlaub,Sebastian F. L. Watt,Aaron Micallef,Melanie Ray,Ingo Klaucke,Sina Muff,Dirk Klaeschen,Michel Kühn,Theresa Roth,Christoph Böttner,Bettina Schramm,Judith Elger,Sascha Brune +14 more
TL;DR: A detailed reconstruction of the 1888 Ritter sector collapse based on high-resolution 2D and 3D seismic and bathymetric data covering the failed volcanic edifice and the associated mass-movement deposits is presented in this article.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pockmarks in the Witch Ground Basin, Central North Sea
Christoph Böttner,Christian Berndt,Benedict T. I. Reinardy,Jacob Geersen,Jens Karstens,Jonathan M. Bull,Ben Callow,Anna Lichtschlag,Mark Schmidt,Judith Elger,Bettina Schramm,Matthias Haeckel +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use 2D and 3D seismic reflection, multibeam bathymetric, geochemical and sedimentological data to map and describe pockmarks in the Witch Ground Basin (central North Sea), characterize associated sedimentological and fluid migration structures, and analyze the related methane release.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tectonic Controls on Gas Hydrate Distribution Off SW Taiwan
Christian Berndt,Wu-Cheng Chi,Marion Jegen,Elodie Lebas,Elodie Lebas,Gareth Crutchley,Sina Muff,Sebastian Hölz,Malte Sommer,Saulwood Lin,Char-Shine Liu,Andrew Lin,Dirk Klaeschen,Ingo Klaucke,Liwen Chen,Liwen Chen,Liwen Chen,Ho-Han Hsu,Pascal Kunath,Pascal Kunath,Judith Elger,Kirk D McIntosh,Tomas Feseker +22 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the influence of tectonism on the dynamics of gas hydrate systems in the South China Sea and found that there are multiple thrust faults on the active margin while much fewer and smaller faults exist in the passive margin.
