Size and frequency of natural forest disturbances and the Amazon forest carbon balance
Fernando Del Bon Espírito-Santo,Fernando Del Bon Espírito-Santo,Manuel Gloor,Michael Keller,Michael Keller,Michael Keller,Yadvinder Malhi,Sassan Saatchi,Bruce Walker Nelson,Raimundo Cosme de Oliveira Junior,Cleuton Pereira,Jon Lloyd,Jon Lloyd,Steve Frolking,Michael W. Palace,Yosio Edemir Shimabukuro,Valdete Duarte,Abel Monteagudo Mendoza,Gabriela Lopez-Gonzalez,Timothy R. Baker,Ted R. Feldpausch,Ted R. Feldpausch,Roel J. W. Brienen,Gregory P. Asner,Doreen S. Boyd,Oliver L. Phillips +25 more
TL;DR: Simulation of growth and mortality indicates that even when all carbon losses from intermediate and large-scale disturbances are considered, these are outweighed by the net biomass accumulation by tree growth, supporting the inference of an Amazon carbon sink.
Journal ArticleDOI
What controls tropical forest architecture: testing environmental, structural and floristic drivers
Lindsay F. Banin,Lindsay F. Banin,Ted R. Feldpausch,Oliver L. Phillips,Timothy R. Baker,Jon Lloyd,Jon Lloyd,Kofi Affum-Baffoe,Eric Arets,Nicholas J. Berry,Nicholas J. Berry,Matt Bradford,Roel J. W. TL;DR: In this paper, the extent to which the vertical structure of tropical forests is determined by environment, forest structure or biogeographical history was tested using height and diameter data from 20,497 trees in 112 non-contiguous plots.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tropical forest tree mortality, recruitment and turnover rates: calculation, interpretation and comparison when census intervals vary
Simon L. Lewis,Simon L. Lewis,Oliver L. Phillips,Douglas Sheil,Barbara Vinceti,Timothy R. Baker,Timothy R. Baker,Sandra Brown,Andrew W. Graham,Niro Higuchi,David W. Hilbert,William F. Laurance,Jean Lejoly,Yadvinder Malhi,Abel Monteagudo,Percy Núñez Vargas,Bonaventure Sonké,John Terborgh,Rodolfo Vásquez Martínez +18 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors quantify the census interval effect for tropical forest trees, develop correction methods and re-assess some previously published conclusions about forest dynamics, and show that the pan-tropical increase in stem turnover rates over the late 20th century cannot be attributed to combining data with differing census interval.
Journal ArticleDOI
Amazon forest response to repeated droughts

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the impact of the 2010 Amazon drought on forest dynamics using ground-based observations of mortality and growth from an extensive forest plot network and found that during the 2010 drought interval, forests did not gain biomass (net change: −0.43
Journal ArticleDOI
Topography shapes the structure, composition and function of tropical forest landscapes.
Tommaso Jucker,Tommaso Jucker,Boris Bongalov,David F. R. P. Burslem,Reuben Nilus,Michele Dalponte,Simon L. Lewis,Oliver L. Phillips,Lan Qie,Lan Qie,David A. Coomes +10 more
TL;DR: It was found that subtle differences in elevation – which control soil chemistry and hydrology – profoundly influenced the structure, composition and diversity of the canopy of old‐growth forest.
