World Register of Marine Species
Leen Vandepitte,Bart Vanhoorne,Wim Decock,A. Trias Verbeeck,S. Dekeyzer,S. Colpaert,Francisco Hernandez +6 more
TL;DR: WoRMS has an editorial management system where each taxonomic group is represented by an expert who has the authority over the content, and is responsible for controlling the quality of the information.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The first register of the marine species of the world is compiled and it is estimated that between one-third and two-thirds of marine species may be undescribed, and previous estimates of there being well over one million marine species appear highly unlikely.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global coordination and standardisation in marine biodiversity through the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and related databases.
Mark J. Costello,Philippe Bouchet,Geoff A. Boxshall,Kristian Fauchald,Dennis P. Gordon,Bert W. Hoeksema,Gary C. B. Poore,Rob W. M. Van Soest,Sabine Stöhr,T. Chad Walter,Bart Vanhoorne,Wim Decock,Ward Appeltans +12 more
TL;DR: The scale of the problems with species names, synonyms, and their classification is illustrated, and how WoRMS publishes online quality assured information on marine species is described to show increased taxonomic efficiency and quality control in marine biodiversity research and management.
Aphia for a World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS)
Ward Appeltans,Mark J. Costello,Bart Vanhoorne,Wim Decock,Leen Vandepitte,Francisco Hernandez,Jan Mees,E. Vanden Berghe +7 more
TL;DR: This presentation will demonstrate the WoRMS webportal and all its functionalities, such as the web-based services and the online edit tool fo r the taxonom ic experts, and will encourage addition of overlooked species to the list.
Journal ArticleDOI
Improving nomenclatural consistency: a decade of experience in the World Register of Marine Species
Tammy Horton,Serge Gofas,Andreas Kroh,Gary C. B. Poore,Geoffrey B. Read,Gary Rosenberg,Sabine Stöhr,Nicolas Bailly,Nicole Boury-Esnault,Simone N. Brandão,Mark J. Costello,Wim Decock,S. Dekeyzer,Francisco Hernandez,Jan Mees,Gustav Paulay,Leen Vandepitte,Bart Vanhoorne,Sofie Vranken +18 more
TL;DR: The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) as discussed by the authors has been used for a decade to collect the accepted species names for all marine species and to improve the consistency and quality of data held while keeping pace with the addition of > 2000 new marine species described annually.
