TL;DR: The first register of the marine species of the world is compiled and it is estimated that between one-third and two-thirds of marine species may be undescribed, and previous estimates of there being well over one million marine species appear highly unlikely.

Invertebrate diversity of the unexplored marine western margin of Australia: taxonomy and implications for global biodiversity

TL;DR: It is shown that infaunal macrofauna (crustaceans and polychaetes) of the lower bathyal depth range are underrepresented among available data and documented results from Australia, and estimates of global species, however made, are based on limited data.

Productivity enhances benthic species richness along an oligotrophic Indian Ocean continental margin
Anna W. McCallum,Skipton N. C. Woolley,Magda Błażewicz-Paszkowycz,Joanna G. Browne,Sarah Gerken,Rudy J. Kloser,Gary C. B. Poore,David A. Staples,Anna E. Syme,Joanne Taylor,Genefor Walker-Smith,Alan Williams,Robin S. Wilson +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the influence of energy and habitat complexity on benthic species richness along an oligotrophic continental margin within the Indian Ocean and found that species richness was positively correlated with net primary productivity.
