Abstract: We report a systematic study of the relationship between crystal quality and electrical properties of InAs nanowires grown by MOVPE and MBE, with crystal structure varying from wurtzite to zinc blende. We find that mixtures of these phases can exhibit up to 2 orders of magnitude higher resistivity than single-phase nanowires, with a temperature-activated transport mechanism. However, it is also found that defects in the form of stacking faults and twin planes do not significantly affect the resistivity. These findings are important for nanowire-based devices, where uncontrolled formation of particular polytype mixtures may lead to unacceptable device variability.

Abstract: In this paper, a multi-scale analysis method for heat transfer in heterogeneous solids is presented. The principles of the method rely on a two-scale computational homogenization approach which is applied successfully for the stress analysis of multi-phase solids under purely mechanical loading. The present paper extends this methodology to heat conduction problems. The flexibility of the method permits one to take into account local microstructural heterogeneities and thermal anisotropy, including non-linearities which might arise at some stage of the thermal loading history. The resulting complex microstructural response is transferred back to the macro level in a consistent manner. A proper macro to micro transition is established in terms of the applied boundary conditions and likewise a micro to macro transition is formulated in the form of consistent averaging relations. Imposition of boundary conditions and extraction of macroscopic quantities are elaborated in detail. A nested finite element solution procedure is outlined, and the effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated by some illustrative example problems.

Abstract: By monitoring the mass fractions of CO2 (m/z 44) and methylformate (m/z 60, formed from CH3OH + HCOOH) with on-line electrochemical mass spectrometry (OLEMS), the selectivity and structure sensitivity of the methanol oxidation pathways were investigated on the basal planesPt(111), Pt(110), and Pt(100)and the stepped Pt electrodesPt(554) and Pt(553)in sulfuric and perchloric acid electrolytes. The maximum reactivity of the MeOH oxidation reaction on Pt(111), Pt(110), and Pt(100) increases in the order Pt(111) < Pt(110) < Pt(100). Mass spectrometry results indicate that the direct oxidation pathway through soluble intermediates plays a pronounced role on Pt(110) and Pt(111), while, on Pt(100), the indirect pathway through adsorbed carbon monoxide is predominant. In 0.5 M H2SO4, introducing steps in the (111) plane increases the total reaction rate, while the relative importance of the direct pathway decreases considerably. Abstract: A modular one-component supramolecular transient network in water, based on poly(ethylene glycol) and end-capped with four-fold hydrogen bonding units, is reported. Due to its nonlinear structural formation, this system allows active proteins to be added to the hydrogel during formation. Once implanted in vivo it releases the protein by erosion of both the protein and polymer via dissolution.
