TL;DR: In this article, an automated laser pressing system assembles and aligns a laser header subassembly to a lens housing, which is used to adjust the alignment as necessary before the housing and header are permanently affixed.
Abstract: Au automated laser pressing system assembles and aligns a laser header subassembly to a lens housing. The automated system generally includes a precise press system and a fast fiber alignment system. The press system precisely presses the housing onto the header, or the header onto the housing, and the fiber alignment system keeps a fiber in alignment with light passed through the lens to measure the laser header to lens housing alignment. Feedback from the fiber alignment system to the housing press system is used to precisely and automatically adjust the alignment as necessary before the housing and header are permanently affixed.

TL;DR: In this article, a metal-assisted DBR was proposed for a long-wavelength VCSEL on a InP substrate or a red-color DBR on a GaAs substrate.
Abstract: A VCSEL includes a substrate having a partially removed portion; a metal-assisted DBR having a metal layer and a first mirror stack, wherein the metal layer is located at the partially removed portion of the substrate; an active region having a plurality of quantum wells over the metal-assisted DBR; and a second mirror stack over the active region, wherein a number of alternating layers of the first mirror stack is substantially smaller than a number typically required for a VCSEL without the integrated metal reflector. Such a metal-assisted DBR is especially useful for a long-wavelength VCSEL on a InP substrate or a red-color VCSEL on a GaAs substrate.

TL;DR: In this paper, a core center is formed in the core of the optical fiber, which is doped with impurities, is hollow, or is pulled at a lower temperature to increase diffraction of the core center.
Abstract: An optical fiber for reducing modal dispersion and increasing both travel distance and transmission speed. A core center is formed in the core of the optical fiber. The core center is doped with impurities, is hollow, or is pulled at a lower temperature to increase diffraction of the core center. The core center discriminates the low order modes such that only the high order modes are present in the optical fiber. Because the low order modes are absorbed or otherwise discriminated against, the range of propagation constants is reduced and modal dispersion is likewise reduced. High order modes can be launched in the optical fiber using a lens whose center portion is obscured or by using a diffractive lens to couple a source to the optical fiber.

TL;DR: In this paper, a header assembly for extended temperature optical transmitters is described, which includes a hermetic enclosure and a header base with an interior surface, and a thermoelectric cooler (TEC) having a planar configuration and a thickness not exceeding 500 microns is positioned adjacent to the interior surface of the header assembly, the TEC being in thermal communication with the header base and mounting surface.
Abstract: A header assembly for extended temperature optical transmitters is disclosed. The header assembly may include a hermetic enclosure and a header base with an interior surface. A plurality of conductive leads penetrate from the outer portion of the header assembly to the interior surface. A thermoelectric cooler (“TEC”) having a planar configuration and a thickness not exceeding 500 microns is positioned adjacent to the interior surface of the header assembly, the TEC being in thermal communication with the header base and a mounting surface. A submount, on which a laser diode is positioned, is in thermal communication with the mounting surface of the TEC. In this manner, the TEC may be configured affect a selective transfer of heat to the laser diode and transfer of heat away from the laser diode. In some embodiments, the header assembly is configured to operate at optical data transmission rates of 10 Gbps or higher in such extended ambient temperatures.
