30 Jan 2004TL;DR: In this paper, an EMI shielding mechanism for use with an electronic module, such as an opto-electronic transceiver module, is disclosed, which includes a plurality of shielding tabs disposed on an outside face of the module.
Abstract: An EMI shielding mechanism for use with an electronic module, such as an opto-electronic transceiver module, is disclosed. The EMI shielding mechanism includes a plurality of shielding tabs disposed on an outside face of the module. When the module is fully disposed in a port of a host device, the shielding tabs contact an edge of the port, thus reducing the amount of EMI radiation emitted form that edge. The shielding tabs are angled so that when the module is fully disposed in the port, a portion of the shielding tabs is inside the port and a portion is outside of the port. The angled shielding tabs provide a spring force which assists a user to extract the module from the port.

12 Dec 2003TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a network tap for enabling attached devices such as an intrusion detection system to transmit information into a communication line of the network without disrupting the network traffic on the communication line.
Abstract: A network tap for enabling attached devices, such as an intrusion detection system, to transmit information into a communication line of the network without disrupting the network traffic on the communication line. When the attached device is an intrusion detection device, the network tap is connected to a firewall. An Ethernet switch or field programmable gate array (FPGA) is incorporated in the network tap to coordinate the transmission of device data to avoid data collisions with data transmissions already existing in the communication line. The network tap may be operated in various modes to accommodate different capabilities of attached devices. In addition, the network tap has various port configurations to allow a user to connect various attached devices through a single cable or dual cables.

05 Oct 2009TL;DR: In this article, a latching mechanism having a latch, a cam and a slider is presented. But the cam is configured to rotate about an axis of rotation and the slider is not operably connected to the cam.
Abstract: One embodiment includes a latching mechanism having a latch, a cam and a slider. The cam is configured to rotate about an axis of rotation. The cam is also configured to displace an end of the latch when the cam is rotated about the axis of rotation. The slider is operably connected to the cam and is configured to cause the cam to rotate about the axis of rotation. Some embodiments also include a retaining cover and a boot. The retaining cover secures a second end of the latch to a module in which the latching mechanism is implemented. The boot is operatively connected to the slider and can be manipulated by a user to activate the slider.

26 Dec 2007TL;DR: In this article, an optical transmitter coupled to a periodic optical spectrum reshaper (OSR) is proposed to convert frequency modulated pulses from the laser into amplitude modulated (AM) pulses.
Abstract: An optical transmitter is disclosed including a widely tunable laser coupled to a periodic optical spectrum reshaper (OSR) to convert frequency modulated pulses from the laser into amplitude modulated pulses. The laser is tuned to generate pulses corresponding to passbands of the OSR spanning a wide range of frequencies. The laser includes a gain section having an optical path length substantially shorter than the total optical path length of the laser. The laser may be a Y-branch laser having reverse-biased sampled gratings or ring resonator filters tuned by stripe heaters. The laser may also include a reflective external cavity section tunable by modulating the temperature of ring resonators or etalons. The OSR may be integrally formed with the external cavity of the ECL laser.

TL;DR: The current state of VCSELs for 28Gbps, and higher speeds is discussed, focusing on evolution to more complex active regions and alternate wavelength approaches, particularly as the market evolves to more active optical cables.
Abstract: Over the last 20 years, nearly 1 billion VCSELs have been shipped, the vast majority of them emitting at 850nm using GaAs active regions, and primarily used in data communications and optical tracking applications. Looking to the future, the ever increasing speed of data communications is driving the VCSEL to evolve with more complex active regions, optical mode control, and alternate wavelengths to meet the more stringent requirements. We will discuss the current state of VCSELs for 28Gbps, and higher speeds, focusing on evolution to more complex active regions and alternate wavelength approaches, particularly as the market evolves to more active optical cables. Other high volume applications for VCSELs are driving improvements in single mode and optical power characteristics. We will present several evolving market trends and applications, and the specific VCSEL requirements that are imposed. The ubiquitous 850nm, GaAs active region VCSEL is evolving in multiple ways, and will continue to be a viable optical source well in to the future.
