TL;DR: In this paper, an optical subassembly (OSA) positioning device includes a front piece, a top back piece, and a top connector piece connecting the front piece and the top back pieces, a bottom back piece and a bottom connector pieces connecting the from-piece and the bottom-piece.
Abstract: In one example embodiment, an optical subassembly (OSA) positioning device includes a front piece, a top back piece, and a top connector piece connecting the front piece and the top back piece, a bottom back piece, and a bottom connector piece connecting the from piece and the bottom back piece. The front piece defines a first port. The first port is configured to receive and substantially secure a first OSA in an x-axis position and a y-axis position when the OSA positioning device is positioned within an optoelectronic module. The top and bottom connector pieces are deformable in response to an exerted force so as to bias a flange of the first OSA against a shell of the optoelectronic module such that the first OSA is secured in a z-axis position when the OSA positioning device is positioned within the optoelectronic module.

TL;DR: In this article, a header assembly for use in a communication device has a base that includes a plurality of single ports through which a corresponding plurality of leads extends, and the leads are retained in their respective single ports by a retainer material.
Abstract: In one example, a header assembly for use in a communication device has a base that includes a plurality of single ports through which a corresponding plurality of leads extends. The leads are retained in their respective single ports by a retainer material. Additionally, the base includes one or more plural ports through which two or more leads extend.

TL;DR: In this article, a circular polarization modulator is proposed to output light alternating in time between left-hand and right-hand circular is provided, which can produce light having as near equally excited TE and TM modes as a forty-five degree linear input polarization may provide.
Abstract: A circular polarization modulator operable to output light alternating in time between left-hand and right-hand circular is provided. The circular polarization modulator preferably comprises three elements: a TE-TM mode-excitation balancer, a TE-TM phase-difference modulator and a TE-TM mode-shape matcher. The TE-TM mode-excitation balancer, which may include a DC voltage source and is preferably based upon a tilt-poled polymer, preferably produces light having as near equally excited TE and TM modes as a forty-five degree (45°) linear input polarization may provide. The TE-TM phase-difference modulator preferably includes an AC voltage source and provides wave retardation capable of producing a phase difference between the TE and TM waves. Upon the light passing through the patterned poling region produced by the first two elements, the unpoled TE-TM mode-shape matcher preferably provides for matching of the TE and TM mode profiles of the light, thereby yielding left-hand and right-hand circular polarized light.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for etching facets of a laser die prior to coating in such a way as to control the formation of oxides and metallic films on the facet is disclosed.
Abstract: A method for etching facets of a laser die prior to coating in such a way as to control the formation of oxides and metallic films on the facet is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes placing a wafer on which the laser is included in the interior volume of an etching chamber. Nitrogen is introduced into the interior volume to define a nitrogen-rich environment. The laser facet is then etched in the nitrogen-rich environment with argon delivered from an ion gun. In another embodiment, the method includes placing the laser in an ion beam etching chamber, then physically etching the facet of the laser with an ion beam that includes an argon/nitrogen mixture. The laser facet(s) can then be coated as desired. The etching method reduces the incidence of leakage current during operation of the laser die caused by metallic film formation on the facet before coating.

TL;DR: In this article, a thermal conduction system for dissipating thermal energy generated by operation of an optical subassembly that disposed within a shell of a communication module is described, where a thermally conductive flexible member contacts the optical subassembles and contacts the shell of the communication module.
Abstract: An example embodiment includes a thermal conduction system for dissipating thermal energy generated by operation of an optical subassembly that disposed within a shell of a communication module. The thermal conduction system can include a thermally conductive flexible member that contacts the optical subassembly and to contact the shell of the communication module. By contacting the optical subassembly and the shell, the thermal energy generated by operation of the optical subassembly can transfer from the optical subassembly to the shell. The thermally conductive flexible member defines thermally conductive flexible member holes that correspond to pins extending from the optical subassembly. The pins pass through the thermally conductive flexible member holes enabling the thermally conductive flexible member to contact the optical subassembly.
