TL;DR: In this paper, the performance of a transmission line tower under direct lightning stroke is studied using EMTP, where the lightning surge striking the top of tower is assumed to be 10/350 µs, 200 kA, and the reflection coefficient due to occurrence of multiple reflections, govern the overvoltage characteristics in transmission tower.
Abstract: Lightning stroke on power apparatus is detrimental for reliable operation of power transmission and distribution system. In this work, the performances of a transmission line tower under direct lightning stroke is studied using EMTP. The lightning surge striking the top of tower is assumed to be 10/350 µs, 200 kA. In this simulation work, the propagation and reflection of lightning wave, affecting the tower top and base voltage is studied under different condition. Further the wave propagation and reflection from adjacent towers and its effect on tower top as well as base voltage is studied. It is observed that the height of the tower and the distance between two adjacent towers play an important role in impulse wave propagation. Further, the reflection coefficient due to occurrence of multiple reflections, govern the overvoltage characteristics in transmission tower.

TL;DR: In this article , the authors proposed a counter placement scheme (CPS) for Hadoop based on the completion of maps and data replacement strategy based on placing at least a single block of file in the rack with the highest computation, and assigning reducers to the rack and node with highest computation.
Abstract: Hadoop has been regarded as the de-facto standard for handling data-intensive distributed applications with its popular storage and processing engine called as the Hadoop distributed File System (HDFS) and MapReduce. Hadoop’s inherent assumption of homogeneity in the cluster is a major cause of performance deterioration due to the huge shuffle required for the processing of data during map phase and reducer phase. This chapter addresses this performance deterioration by proposing a counter placement scheme (CPS) whose main contributions are enumerated as follows; (i) Profiling of nodes based on the completion of maps, (ii) Movement of high-performance nodes into a single rack for tracking higher computation, (iii) Data replacement strategy based on placing at least a single block of file in the rack with the highest computation, and (iv) Finally assigning reducers to the rack and node with highest computation. The experiments performed clearly signify the merits of CPS in terms of reduction in the average completion time, reduce time and off-local shuffle by about (1.9–22.83%), (2.1–21.5%), (4.25–24%) while running several benchmarks.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a shortest job first (SJF) algorithm to allocate the incoming cloudlets to VM in the ascending order of its length whose response time is evaluated when space-shared and time-shared provisioning policy is implemented.
Abstract: The sustainability of any system is based on the performance and the service it gives to the users. The main objective of this work is to assess the performance of the cloud system in terms of its response time using CloudSim simulator. The performance is evaluated on a set of heterogenous cloudlets and the way the processing cores of the host are provision to the cloudlets and virtual machines (VMs) in the execution engine. The default scheduling algorithm used by the CloudSim simulator to allocate these cloudlets from the datacenter broker to the VM is based on the first come first serve (FCFS) scheduling algorithm. This paper proposed the shortest job first (SJF) algorithm to allocate the incoming cloudlets to VM in the ascending order of its length whose response time is evaluated when space-shared and time-shared provisioning policy is implemented. The experimental evaluation of the proposed algorithm shows better improvement when the order of length is considered.

TL;DR: A simple and robust algorithm for detection and retargeting of emphasized words, written as italics, in a scanned document page, which extracts and retargets the emphasized words to summarize the content of the papers.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a simple and robust algorithm for detection and retargeting of emphasized words, written as italics, in a scanned document page. The detection of italics is done using an appropriate use of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), applied on a selected subset of pixels coming from the input character image boundary. The proposed method is font and style invariant. The localization of the emphasized words helps us in information retrieval by means of retargeted words. It is seen that, a good number of publication houses use emphasized (italic) words for specifying the keywords, author's affiliations etc., in the front page of the articles. Our method extracts and retargets the emphasized words to summarize the content of the papers. Experimental result shows the robustness and degree of precision.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of polypropylene (PP) fibers on the mechanical strength of concrete was investigated and the results indicated that the used of PP fibers can significantly improve the flexural and splitting tensile strengths of concrete materials whereas it resulted a decreased in compressive strength.
Abstract: Polypropylene (PP) fibers for making fabric which is used for packing cement have a high strength and high tear resistance. Due to these excellent properties the present study investigates the effect of PP fibers on the mechanical strength of concrete. Mechanical strength parameters such as compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength are evaluated. Structural integrity of concrete using Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) was also studied. Concrete containing PP fibers in percentage of 0%, 0.15%, 0.25%, 0.5% and 0.75% was developed with a characteristic compressive strength of 25 MPa. Concrete cubes, cylinder and prismatic specimens were cast and tested. It was found that the UPV values recorded for all specimens were of the similar order. Test results indicated the used of PP fibers can significantly improve the flexural and splitting tensile strengths of concrete materials whereas it resulted a decreased in compressive strength. The relative increase in split tensile and flexural strength was optimum at a fiber dosage of 0.5% and a mild decreased were observed in 28 days compressive strength. The findings in this paper suggested that PP fibers deriving from these waste cement bags are a feasible fiber option for fiber-reinforced concrete productions.
