06 Jan 2021TL;DR: Though similar symptoms and haematological findings occur in males and females, specific disparities in some parameters were observed and healthcare personnel are recommended to consider these differences when caring for patients hospitalized for COVID-19.
Abstract: Objectives: The study seeks to assess the sex differences in reported clinical symptoms and haematological parameters of hospitalized COVID-19 cases. Study Design: A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Covid-19 Treatment Centre, Rivers State, between May 2020 and July 2020. Methodology: Descriptive data collection for patients diagnosed of COVID-19 was employed within the months of May to July 2020. A comparison of demographic profile, presenting symptoms, comorbidities and laboratory findings between males and females was analyzed using SPSS version 25. Ethical approval was obtained prior to commencing data collection. Original Research Article Dan-Jumbo et al.; AJRID, 6(1): 8-16, 2021; Article no.AJRID.63430 9 Results: In this study, data of 56 patients were analyzed of which 31 (55.4%) were males and 25 (44.6%) were females. The mean age for all patients was 36 years and males had a higher mean age (40 ± 12.6) compared to females (31 ± 8.8). Twelve patients (21.4%) reported pre-existing comorbidities and Hypertension 11 (19.6%) was the prevalent co-morbidity followed by peptic ulcer 2 (3.6%) and Diabetes 2 (3.6%) and these were more common among males. Triglyceride level was significantly higher among females (p= 0.028) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) level was significantly lower among females (p= 0.044) while systolic blood pressure level was significantly higher among males (p= 0.011). Conclusion: Though similar symptoms and haematological findings occur in males and females, specific disparities in some parameters were observed. We recommend healthcare personnel to consider these differences when caring for patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

TL;DR: Enenifa et al. as mentioned in this paper examined the relationship between workplace recreational activities and employee effectiveness in Deposit Money banks in Yenogoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria, using a cross-sectional survey in its investigation of the variables.
Abstract: This study examined the relationship between workplace recreational activities and employee effectiveness in Deposit Money Banks in Yenogoa, Bayelsa State. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey in its investigation of the variables. Primary data was generated through structured questionnaire. The population of the study was 277 employees of nineteen (19) Deposit Money Banks in Yenogoa, Bayelsa State. The sample size of 164 was determined using the Taro Yamane’s formula for sample size determination. The reliability of the instrument was achieved by the use of the Cronbach Alpha coefficient with all the items scoring above 0.70. The hypotheses were tested using the Spearman’s Rank Order Correlation Statistics. The tests were carried out at a 95% confidence interval and a 0.05 level of significance. Findings from the data analysis revealed that there is a significant the relationship between workplace recreational activities rand employee effectiveness in Deposit Money Banks in Yenogoa, Bayelsa State. The study recommended that management of Deposit Money Banks should create avenues for workplace recreational activities for its employees because it not only polishes the employee skills but also prepare them to accomplish the current and future challenging assignments. It was hereby recommended that employees should be allowed activities that would increase and boast their performance in the work place. TL;DR: The seroprevalence rate of HIV and HBsAg in this study were low and continued screening of pregnant women for these infections remains valuable and further community-based studies to identify risk factors are recommended.
Abstract: Background: Infection with hepatitis B (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are global public health problems. These infections during pregnancy increase the risk of maternal morbidity and mortality, and also pose a risk to the fetus due to mother to child transmission. Objective: To determine the prevalence of seropositive HIV and HBsAg cases amongst pregnant women at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH). Methodology: A retrospective review of hospital and laboratory records of all pregnant women booked at RSUTH in two years, from May 2017 to April 2019, was carried out. Data on patients’ age, parity and educational level and reactivity of HIV and HBsAg test at booking were retrieved Original Research Article Awoyesuku et al.; IJTDH, 40(1): 1-9, 2019; Article no.IJTDH.53330 2 using structured proforma and analyzed using Epi Info Version 7. Test for significance using Chisquare was set at a significant level of P<0.05. Results: 3560 patients had HIV and HBsAg screening out of which 148 (4.2%) and 9 (0.3%) respectively were positive. The comorbidity rate in this study was 0.06%. The mean age was 31.5±4.7 years and the mean gestational age at booking was 22.1±6.8 weeks. There was no significant relationship between their age (χ2 = 2.690, p-value=0.442) and parity (χ2 = 3.759, pvalue = 0.145) with HIV seropositivity, but these were significant for HBsAg (χ2 = 13.691, p-value = 0.003) (χ2 = 13.121, p-value=0.001). Educational status was significant for HIV (χ2 = 16.188, pvalue=0.000) but not for HBsAg (χ2 = 0.229, p-value=0.892). Conclusion: The seroprevalence rate of HIV and HBsAg in this study were low. HIV seroprevalence was significantly affected by lower education, while HBsAg seroprevalence was significantly affected by younger maternal age and nulliparity. Continued screening of pregnant women for these infections remains valuable and further community-based studies to identify risk factors are recommended.

29 May 2021TL;DR: The relationship between otolith length and width with the fish length in this study showed curvilinearity, indicating the usefulness of the otolith proportions in back calculation of the length of the fish in biological and paleontological studies.
Abstract: Catfish are important fishery resources in the Niger Delta therefore they require studies on its growth patterns and morphometrics. This study examined the relationship between the length and width of catfish otoliths and their fish length. Catfish samples were harvested from New Calabar and Ase Rivers, Niger Delta, Nigeria, by fishers using cast net and purse seines. The fishes were identified, measured, otoliths removed and measured using standard methods. Simple linear regressions expressed the relationship between otolith dimensions and fish length. A total of 80 individuals made up of 7 species from 5 families (Ariidae, Claroteidae, Claridae, Schilbeidae and Mochokidae) were selected for this study. Correlation analysis between the morphometric parameters of the otoliths from the catfish species in the study area revealed a strong positive correlation between the total length of the fish and the length of the otoliths, with R values ranging from 0.86 to 0.98. There was also a strong positive correlation between total fish length and otolith Original Research Article Oteri et al.; AJOB, 12(1): 28-35, 2021; Article no.AJOB.69108 29 width. The relationship between otolith length and width with the fish length in this study showed curvilinearity, indicating the usefulness of the otolith proportions in back calculation of the length of the fish in biological and paleontological studies.
