Abstract: We analyze the point spread function (PSF) of the image processing system for radial Hilbert transform and propose a novel spiral phase filter, called the Laguerre-Gaussian spatial filter (LGSF). Theoretical analysis and real experiments show that the LGSF possesses some advantages in comparison with the conventional spiral phase plate (SPP). For example, the PSF of the imaging system with a LGSF presents smaller suboscillations than that with the conventional SPP, which allows us to realize a radial Hilbert transform for achieving a high contrast edge enhancement with high resolution.

Abstract: Adaptations to combined salinity and waterlogging stress were evaluated in two Suaeda salsa populations from different saline environments. Seedlings were exposed to 1, 200 and 600 mM NaCl in drained or waterlogged sand for 22 days in a glasshouse. Waterlogging did not significantly affect the K(+) /Na(+) ratio or Cl(-) concentration in leaves of either population. Adventitious roots were produced only by the inland population and under the waterlogged condition. X-ray microanalysis showed that S. salsa roots of the intertidal population accumulated more [Na(+) ] and [Cl(-) ] in both the cortex and stele than the roots of the inland population. The ability of roots to exclude Na(+) and Cl(-) was greater in the intertidal population than in the inland population, which may explain why leaves of the intertidal population accumulated less Na(+) and Cl(-) than the leaves of the inland population. The lower level of Cl(-) than Na(+) in leaves of both populations may result from the greater ability of roots to exclude Cl(-) than Na(+) . These traits may help the two S. salsa populations adapt to their different saline environments.

Abstract: Carbon monoxide (CO), a crucial gas message molecule, plays an important role in the regulation of physiological and pathological process. Hypoxia-induced CO is involved in modulating various cellular activities, including signal transduction, proliferation, and apoptosis. However, tracking CO fluctuation in the hypoxic cells is still a challenge due to lack of straightforward, visualized, and noninvasive tools. In this work, based on metal palladium-catalyzed reaction, we present the rational design, synthesis, and biological utility of an azobenzene-cyclopalladium-based fluorescent probe, ACP-2, for CO monitoring. ACP-2 exhibits capacity of detecting CO in aqueous buffer solution and live cells with high sensitivity and specificity. Utilizing ACP-2, we displayed a direct and visual evidence of endogenous CO up-regulation in live cells induced by hypoxia. Moreover, CO up-regulation during oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) was also imaged and certified by ACP-2.

Abstract: A borrowing-hydrogen reaction between amines and alcohols is an atom-economic way to prepare alkylamines, ideally with water as the sole byproduct. Herein, nickel catalysts are used for direct N-alkylation of hydrazides and arylamines using racemic alcohols. Moreover, a nickel catalyst of (S)-binapine was used for an asymmetric N-alkylation of benzohydrazide with racemic benzylic alcohols.
