TL;DR: In this article, the Mn3O4 nanoparticles@reduced graphene oxide (Mn3O 4@rGO) composite is reported as an efficient NRR electrocatalyst with excellent selectivity for NH3 formation.
Abstract: Currently, industrial-scale NH3 production almost relies on energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process from atmospheric N2 with large amount of CO2 emission, while low-cost and high-efficient catalysts are demanded for the N2 reduction reaction (NRR). In this study, Mn3O4 nanoparticles@reduced graphene oxide (Mn3O4@rGO) composite is reported as an efficient NRR electrocatalyst with excellent selectivity for NH3 formation. In 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution, such catalyst obtains a NH3 yield of 17.4 μg·h−1·mg−1cat. and a Faradaic efficiency of 3.52% at −0.85 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. Notably, it also shows high electrochemical stability during electrolysis process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also demonstrate that the (112) planes of Mn3O4 possess superior NRR activity.

TL;DR: A novel multifunctional core-shell nanocomposite material that contains a nonporous dye-doped silica core and a mesoporous silica shell containing photosensitizer molecules, hematoporphyrin, allows simultaneous fluorescence imaging and photosensitization treatment.
Abstract: Here we report the preparation of a novel multifunctional core−shell nanocomposite material that contains a nonporous dye-doped silica core and a mesoporous silica shell containing photosensitizer molecules, hematoporphyrin (HP). This architecture allows simultaneous fluorescence imaging and photosensitization treatment. The photosensitizer molecules are covalently linked to the mesoporous silica shell and exhibit excellent photo-oxidation efficiency. The efficiency of photo-oxidation of the core−shell hybrid nanoparticles was demonstrated to be significantly improved over that in the homogeneous solution. The mesoporous silica nanovehicle acts not only as a carrier for the photosensitizers but also as a nanoreactor to facilitate the photo-oxidation reaction. The doping of fluorescence dyes into the nonporous core endows the imaging capability, which has been demonstrated with cell imaging experiments. This approach could be easily extended to conjugate other functional regents if necessary. These multifu...

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that electrostatic polarization of intraprotein hydrogen bonding, which stabilizes the helix, is critical to the successful folding of 2I9m.
Abstract: We report direct folding of a 17-residue helix protein (pdb:2I9M) by standard molecular dynamics simulation (single trajectory) at room temperature with implicit solvent. Starting from a fully extended structure, 2I9M successfully folds into the native conformation within 16 ns using adaptive hydrogen bond-specific charges to take into account the electrostatic polarization effect. Cluster analysis shows that conformations in the native state cluster have the highest population (78.4%) among all sampled conformations. Folding snapshots and the secondary structure analysis demonstrate that the folding of 2I9M begins at terminals and progresses toward the center. A plot of the free energy landscape indicates that there is no significant free energy barrier during folding, which explains the observed fast folding speed. For comparison, exactly the same molecular dynamics simulation but carried out under existing AMBER charges failed to fold 2I9M into native-like structures. The current study demonstrates that electrostatic polarization of intraprotein hydrogen bonding, which stabilizes the helix, is critical to the successful folding of 2I9m.

TL;DR: The identification and characterization of STOMATAL CLOSURE-RELATED ACTin BINDING PROTEIN1 (SCAB1), an Arabidopsis thaliana actin binding protein, suggest that SCAB1 is required for the precise regulation of actin filament reorganization during stomatal closure.
Abstract: Microfilament dynamics play a critical role in regulating stomatal movement; however, the molecular mechanism underlying this process is not well understood. We report here the identification and characterization of STOMATAL CLOSURERELATED ACTIN BINDING PROTEIN1 (SCAB1), an Arabidopsis thaliana actin binding protein. Plants lacking SCAB1 were hypersensitive to drought stress and exhibited reduced abscisic acid-, H2O2-, and CaCl2-regulated stomatal movement. In vitro and in vivo analyses revealed that SCAB1 binds, stabilizes, and bundles actin filaments. SCAB1 shares sequence similarity only with plant proteins and contains a previously undiscovered actin binding domain. During stomatal closure, actin filaments switched from a radial orientation in open stomata to a longitudinal orientation in closed stomata. This switch took longer in scab1 plants than in wild-type plants and was correlated with the delay in stomatal closure seen in scab1 mutants in response to drought stress. Our results suggest that SCAB1 is required for the precise regulation of actin filament reorganization during stomatal closure.
