Abstract: A measurement of the W boson pair production cross section in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV is presented. The data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 fb^(-1). The W^+W^− candidates are selected from events with two charged leptons, electrons or muons, and large missing transverse energy. The measured W^+W^− cross section is 60.1 ± 0.9(stat) ± 3.2 (exp) ± 3.1(theo)±1.6 (lumi)\,pb = 60.1 ± 4.8\,pb60.1 ± 0.9 (stat) ±3.2 (exp)±3.1 (theo) ± 1.6 (lumi)\,pb = 60.1 ± 4.8\, pb, consistent with the standard model prediction. The W^+W^− cross sections are also measured in two different fiducial phase space regions. The normalized differential cross section is measured as a function of kinematic variables of the final-state charged leptons and compared with several perturbative QCD predictions. Limits on anomalous gauge couplings associated with dimension-six operators are also given in the framework of an effective field theory. The corresponding 95 % confidence level intervals are −5.7

Abstract: The two matrix iterations X k+1 = I A*X -1 k A are known to converge linearly to a positive definite solution of the matrix equations X ± A*X -1 A = I, respectively, for known choices of X 0 and under certain restrictions on A. The convergence for previously suggested starting matrices X 0 is generally very slow. This paper explores different initial choices of X 0 in both iterations that depend on the extreme singular values of A and lead to much more rapid convergence. Further, the paper offers a new algorithm for solving the minus sign equation and explores mixed algorithms that use Newton's method in part.

Abstract: A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model in final states with two opposite-sign same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2012. The analysis focuses on searches for a kinematic edge in the invariant mass distribution of the opposite-sign same-flavor lepton pair and for final states with an on-shell Z boson. The observations are consistent with expectations from standard model processes and are interpreted in terms of upper limits on the production of supersymmetric particles.

Abstract: The main target of this study is to develop a theoretical method for determining small contents of dodecanol in samples of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) by a detailed analysis of surface-tension isotherms. As a tool for our analysis, we employ the van der Waals model. Its application to data for alkanols and anionic surfactants gives an excluded area per adsorbed molecule equal to the geometrical area of the molecular cross section and adsorption energies consonant with Traube’s rule. Because the dodecanol and SDS have different excluded areas, we extended the van der Waals model for the case of a two-component adsorption layer, with account for the counterion binding in the Stern layer. General expressions for the surface free energy, two-dimensional equation of state, surface chemical potentials, adsorption isotherms, and surface dilatational elasticity are derived. The experimental surface-tension isotherms are fitted by varying only one adjustable parameter. The model was successfully tested against data for solutions of SDS with a known content of dodecanol. Knowing the parameters of the model, we computed various properties of the surfactant adsorption layer. The results show that the presence of a small amount of dodecanol leads to a considerable increase of the total adsorption and surface elasticity. Even a relatively small (0.2 mol %) fraction of dodecanol in SDS may lead to a predominant content (up to 86 mol %) of dodecanol in the mixed adsorption layer. We applied the model for determining unknown contents of dodecanol in SDS samples at different stages of purification. The addition of NaCl may lead to a significant reduction in the mole fraction of dodecanol in the adsorption layer. The developed theoretical model and computational procedure are also appropriate for a quantitative analysis and computer modeling of the adsorption from other mixed ionic-nonionic surfactant solutions, at both air-water and oil-water interfaces.
