Abstract: Measurement of melanin and blood concentration in human skin is needed in the medical and the cosmetic fields because human skin colour is mainly determined by the colours of melanin and blood. It is difficult to measure these concentrations in human skin because skin has a multi-layered structure and scatters light strongly throughout the visible spectrum. The Monte Carlo simulation currently used for the analysis of skin colour requires long calculation times and knowledge of the specific optical properties of each skin layer. A regression analysis based on the modified Beer-Lambert law is presented as a method of measuring melanin and blood concentration in human skin in a shorter period of time and with fewer calculations. The accuracy of this method is assessed using Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract: This paper presents a tactile sensor system for a robot manipulator and an active-sensing technique to realize 3-D object recognitions concerning object shape, object surface normal, and object edge tracing with experimental results. The proposed tactile sensor units implemented on the robot hand consist of three thin sheets of force-sensitive resistors arranged triangularly with the peripheral circuits. One potential application of the proposed techniques is to realize an effective human-robot cooperation to move an object together by utilizing the control of a hand pose to keep the direction of the hand normal to the object surface in three dimensions, which is often necessary when pushing an object. Another is a 3-D object edge tracing. The proposed techniques can be employed in industrial processes such as welding and inspection to eliminate manual teaching procedures for searching the object edge automatically before doing the welding process. In these applications, information about the object shape or orientation is not required in advance.

Abstract: Experiments aiming at 'day long operation at high performance' have been carried out in TRIAM-1M. The record value of the discharge duration was updated to 5 h and 16 min. Steady-state tokamak operation is studied under the localized plasma wall interaction conditions. The distributions of the heat load, the particle recycling flux and impurity source are investigated to understand the co-deposition and wall pumping. The formation and sustainment of an internal transport barrier (ITB) in enhanced current drive mode has been investigated by controlling the lower hybrid driven current profile by changing the phase spectrum. An ITER relevant remote steering antenna for electron cyclotron wave injection was installed and a relativistic Doppler resonance of the oblique propagating extraordinary wave with energetic electrons driven by lower hybrid waves was studied.

Abstract: A tactile sensor is developed with the aim of covering a robot's entire structure, while reducing wiring requirement and ensuring high-speed response. The sensor detects the center point of load distribution on 2-D surfaces as well as the overall load. There are only four signal wires from the sensor. The sensor response time is nearly constant (within 1 ms) regardless of the number of detection elements, their placements or sensor areas. In this paper, the principles behind the operation of this sensor and the results of experiments using the sensor are described.

Abstract: . In our previous papers we have shown that the fractal (monofractal) dimension (Do) showed a significant increase before the Guam earthquake occurred on 8 August, 1993. In order to have a further support to this precursory effect to the general rupture (earthquake) we have carried out the corresponding multifractal analysis (by means of detrended fluctuation analysis) for the same data to study the statistical self-similar properties in a wide range of scales. We have analyzed the ULF geomagnetic data (the most intense H component) observed at Guam observatory. As the result, we have found that we could observe significant changes in the multifractal parameters at Guam such that αmin showed a meaningful decrease about 25 days before the earthquake and correspondingly Δα increased because αmax exhibited no significant change at all. The most sensitive parameter seems to be non-uniformity factor Δ. Correspondingly, the generalized multifractal dimension Dq (q>1) showed a significant decrease (whereas Dq (q
