Abstract: Although self-determination theory (SDT) is one of the most widely cited theories of human motivation and function, critics have questioned the practical utility of its three needs (i.e., autonomy, competence, and relatedness) in performance contexts. We conduct a meta-analysis (k = 108, N = 30,648) to explore the magnitude and boundary conditions of need satisfaction and performance. As expected, autonomy (ρ = .28), competence (ρ = .37), and relatedness (ρ = .25) predict performance. Incentivization per se has little impact on need-satisfaction: instead, the need satisfaction → performance relationship is moderated by incentive salience. Consistent with a crowding-out hypothesis, need satisfaction matters less to performance when incentives are directly salient (ρ = .22) and more when indirectly salient (ρ = .45). Our meta-analysis demonstrates that indirectly salient incentives and need-satisfaction are indeed compatible, providing a direct response to criticisms of SDT in performance contexts. Additional unexpected findings and future directions are discussed.

Abstract: A simple method for estimating the regeneration energy of CO2 absorption was devised. The regeneration energy of a 30 wt % sodium glycinate (SG) solution was calculated by the summation of the enthalpy of reaction, the sensible heat and the heat of vaporization. Each form of heat energy was determined experimentally. Solubilities of carbon dioxide in the SG solution was determined by gas chromatography (GC) analysis for the gas phase with the help of a virial equation for the liquid phase in the temperature range of 40−120 °C. Heat capacity of the solution was measured by a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and was used to calculate sensible heat. The heat of vaporization was evaluated by applying the Clausius−Clapeyron equation to 20 data points of vapor pressure. All of the experiments were carried out with either a 30 wt % aqueous solution of SG or the same concentration of monoethanolamine (MEA). Abstract: We explore a variant of the ϕ6 model originally proposed in Phys. Rev. D 12 (1975) 1606 as a prototypical, so-called, “bag” model in which domain walls play the role of quarks within hadrons. We examine the steady state of the model, namely an apparent bound state of two kink structures. We explore its linearization, and we find that, as a function of a parameter controlling the curvature of the potential, an effectively arbitrary number of internal modes may arise in the point spectrum of the linearization about the domain wall profile. We explore some of the key characteristics of kink-antikink collisions, such as the critical velocity and the multi-bounce windows, and how they depend on the principal parameter of the model. We find that the critical velocity exhibits a non-monotonic dependence on the parameter controlling the curvature of the potential. For the multi-bounce windows, we find that their range and complexity decrease as the relevant parameter decreases (and as the number of internal modes in the model increases). We use a modified collective coordinates method [in the spirit of recent works such as Phys. Rev. D 94 (2016) 085008] in order to capture the relevant phenomenology in a semi-analytical manner.

Abstract: Solubilization of coal was demonstrated with filtrates (0.45-μm-pore-size filters) obtained from the broth in which Polyporus versicolor had grown. The rate and extent of solubilization were dependent on the age of the fungal cultures, the particle size of the coal, the pH of the filtrates, and the presence of proteins in the filtrates. The rate of solubilization of coal was significantly reduced after proteins in the filtrates were denatured by acid hydrolysis.
