Abstract: Tenascin-C (TN-C) is an extracellular matrix protein which participates in different processes like normal fetal development, wound healing, inflammation, keloids and rheumatoid arthritis. Furthermore, the immunostaining for TN-C is seen in the stroma of various malignant tumors as in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), however, the significance of these findings is still not clear. In this study 62 GBM samples were analyzed immunohistochemically for distribution patterns of TN-C and correlated with angiogenesis and tumor cell proliferation. Tenascin-C in GBM localizes in two compartments, perivascular and intercellular space. Intercellular tenascin-C (TN-C ic) showed focal distribution in 66%, and diffuse one in 34% of cases. Perivascular tenascin-C (TN-C pv) showed strong correlation with microvascular density (MVD) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression. Moreover, it seems that TN-C pv enhanced the effect of VEGF. Intercellular TN-C did not correlate with MVD and VEGF expression, but showed strong correlation with proliferation index. Furthermore, tumors with diffuse TN-C ic expression had higher proliferation indices than tumors with focal TN-C expression. Our results indicate that TN-C plays a role in angiogenesis and tumor cell proliferation, but beside the intensity of expression, the distribution patterns are also important in these processes. This study also suggests that perivascular and intercellular TN-C compartments have probably different sources and different roles in GBM.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurring as a consequence of exposure to war stress. The examined group consisted of 100 male subjects, aged from 25 to 50 years, who had taken part in the War in Croatia, and in whom PTSD had previously been diagnosed. The control group comprised 100 subjects, without PTSD, of the same sex and age group, who had not taken part in the War. A functional evaluation of the stomatognathic system was performed using the Helkimo Anamnestic and Clinical Dysfunction Index. Eighty-two per cent of the group with PTSD had at least one symptom, and 98% at least one sign of dysfunction. Eight per cent reported mild symptoms and 74% severe symptoms. Twenty-eight per cent showed mild clinical signs, 22% had signs of moderate, and 48% of severe dysfunction. Twenty-four per cent of the control group of subjects had at least one symptom, and 52% at least one clinical sign of dysfunction. Twenty-two per cent reported mild and 2% severe symptoms. Mild clinical signs of dysfunction were found in 50% of subjects in the control group, moderate in 2% and none exhibited severe clinical signs. It is concluded that correlation exists between war stress and temporomandibular disorders.

Abstract: The microRNA miR-504 targets TP53 mRNA encoding the p53 tumor suppressor. miR-504 resides within the fibroblast growth factor 13 (FGF13) gene, which is overexpressed in various cancers. We report that the FGF13 locus, comprising FGF13 and miR-504, is transcriptionally repressed by p53, defining an additional negative feedback loop in the p53 network. Furthermore, we show that FGF13 1A is a nucleolar protein that represses ribosomal RNA transcription and attenuates protein synthesis. Importantly, in cancer cells expressing high levels of FGF13, the depletion of FGF13 elicits increased proteostasis stress, associated with the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and apoptosis. Notably, stepwise neoplastic transformation is accompanied by a gradual increase in FGF13 expression and increased dependence on FGF13 for survival ("nononcogene addiction"). Moreover, FGF13 overexpression enables cells to cope more effectively with the stress elicited by oncogenic Ras protein. We propose that, in cells in which activated oncogenes drive excessive protein synthesis, FGF13 may favor survival by maintaining translation rates at a level compatible with the protein quality- control capacity of the cell. Thus, FGF13 may serve as an enabler, allowing cancer cells to evade proteostasis stress triggered by oncogene activation.

Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between digitalization and sustainable development and presents the composite index used for measuring the digital competitiveness of nations – the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI). Today’s environment is highly dependent on technological capabilities. Tracking contemporary technological development is becoming crucial at both micro and macro level. One of the major revolutions in modern business is switching from traditional to digital business models for achieving higher competitiveness level. Digitalization is one of the primary impetus of today’s development. To accept and implement these changes, it is important to highlight the macromarketing role in this process. It is necessary to have concrete measures for identifying the shortcomings, good practices, and track the development. For this purpose, European Commission developed DESI to measure digital performance of European Union countries. This paper examines the DESI methodology and observes how the digital performance of EU affects main sustainable development components: economic, social, and environmental. Thus, the paper explores the correlations of DESI and other composite indices that measure sustainability components. Besides, the research examined the relationships between Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and digital performance. The paper highlights the importance of digitalization as another crucial component of society’s sustainable development.
