Abstract: Human CMV infection of the neonatal CNS results in long-term neurologic sequelae. To define the pathogenesis of fetal human CMV CNS infections, we investigated mechanisms of virus clearance from the CNS of neonatal BALB/c mice infected with murine CMV (MCMV). Virus titers peaked in the CNS between postnatal days 10-14 and infectious virus was undetectable by postnatal day 21. Congruent with virus clearance was the recruitment of CD8(+) T cells into the CNS. Depletion of CD8(+) T cells resulted in death by postnatal day 15 in MCMV-infected animals and increased viral loads in the liver, spleen, and the CNS, suggesting an important role for these cells in the control of MCMV replication in the newborn brain. Examination of brain mononuclear cells revealed that CD8(+) T cell infiltrates expressed high levels of CD69, CD44, and CD49d. IE1(168)-specific CD8(+) T cells accumulated in the CNS and produced IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha but not IL-2 following peptide stimulation. Moreover, adoptive transfer of brain mononuclear cells resulted in decreased virus burden in immunodepleted MCMV-infected syngeneic mice. Depletion of the CD8(+) cell population following transfer eliminated control of virus replication. In summary, these results show that functionally mature virus-specific CD8(+) T cells are recruited to the CNS in mice infected with MCMV as neonates.

Abstract: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is commonly experienced by individuals with non-central nervous system cancers throughout the disease and treatment trajectory. CRCI can have a substantial impact on the functional ability and quality of life of patients and their families. To mitigate the impact, oncology providers must know how to identify, assess, and educate patients and caregivers. The objective of this review is to provide oncology clinicians with an overview of CRCI in the context of adults with non-central nervous system cancers, with a particular focus on current approaches in its identification, assessment, and management.

Abstract: We present an experimental study of dynamical back-action cooling of the fundamental vibrational mode of a thin semitransparent membrane placed within a high-finesse optical cavity We study how the radiation?pressure interaction modifies the mechanical response of the vibrational mode, and the experimental results are in agreement with a Langevin equation description of the coupled dynamics The experiments are carried out in the resolved sideband regime, and we have observed cooling by a factor of ?350 We have also observed the mechanical frequency shift associated with the quadratic term in the expansion of the cavity mode frequency versus the effective membrane position, which is typically negligible in other cavity optomechanical devices

Abstract: The aim of our study was to explore the fibre type composition of the human psoas major muscle at different levels of its origin, from the first lumbar to the fourth lumbar vertebra, and to compare the muscle fibre size and distribution of different fibre types between levels with respect to its complex postural and dynamic function. Muscle samples were collected from 15 young males (younger than 35 years). Serial transverse sections (5 μm) of the samples were cut by cryomicrotome. Type I, IIA and IIX muscle fibres were typed using myosin heavy chain identification. The serial sections were analysed using a light microscope with a magnitude of 100×. The differences between measurements were evaluated using a repeated-measures anova and Scheffe test for post-hoc analysis. Our study showed that the human psoas major muscle was composed of type I, IIA and IIX muscle fibres. It had a predominance of type IIA muscle fibres, whereas type I muscle fibres had the largest cross-sectional area. Type IIX muscle fibres were present as a far smaller percentage and had the smallest cross-sectional area. Moreover, the fibre type composition of the psoas major muscle was different between levels of its origin starting from the first lumbar to the fourth lumbar vertebra. We conclude that the fibre type composition of the psoas major muscle indicated its dynamic and postural functions, which supports the fact that it is the main flexor of the hip joint (dynamic function) and stabilizer of the lumbar spine, sacroiliac and hip joints (postural function). The cranial part of the psoas major muscle has a primarily postural role, whereas the caudal part of the muscle has a dynamic role.
