TL;DR: It is shown that artificial cells that are able to sense and synthesize quorum signaling molecules can chemically communicate with V. fischeri, V. harveyi, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa, laying the foundation for future technologies that control complex networks of natural cells.
Abstract: Artificial cells capable of both sensing and sending chemical messages to bacteria have yet to be built. Here we show that artificial cells that are able to sense and synthesize quorum signaling molecules can chemically communicate with V. fischeri, V. harveyi, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. Activity was assessed by fluorescence, luminescence, RT-qPCR, and RNA-seq. Two potential applications for this technology were demonstrated. First, the extent to which artificial cells could imitate natural cells was quantified by a type of cellular Turing test. Artificial cells capable of sensing and in response synthesizing and releasing N-3-(oxohexanoyl)homoserine lactone showed a high degree of likeness to natural V. fischeri under specific test conditions. Second, artificial cells that sensed V. fischeri and in response degraded a quorum signaling molecule of P. aeruginosa (N-(3-oxododecanoyl)homoserine lactone) were constructed, laying the foundation for future technologies that control complex networks of natural ...

TL;DR: It is proposed that the functional organization of high-order visual cortex partly reflects the organization of downstream functional networks, such as the fronto-parietal action network, due to differences within visual cortex in the connectivity to these networks.
Abstract: The perception of object-directed actions performed by either hands or tools recruits regions in left fronto-parietal cortex. Here, using functional MRI (fMRI), we tested whether the common role of...

TL;DR: This paper assesses the habitat quality and degradation in Italy in relation with the spatial pattern of the current protected areas' network, mainly to identify priority areas of intervention, thus supporting large-scale conservation strategies and support the implementation of the biodiversity-related policies over the long term.

08 May 2007TL;DR: This paper proposes a framework for the integration of stand-alone modules or applications, where integration occurs at the presentation layer, and provides an abstract component model to specify characteristics and behaviors of presentation components and an event-based composition model to specifying the composition logic.
Abstract: The development of user interfaces (UIs) is one of the most time-consuming aspects in software development. In this context, the lack of proper reuse mechanisms for UIs is increasingly becoming manifest, especially as software development is more and more moving toward composite applications. In this paper we propose a framework for the integration of stand-alone modules or applications, where integration occurs at the presentation layer. Hence, the final goal is to reduce the effort required for UI development by maximizing reus. The design of the framework is inspired by lessons learned from application integration, appropriately modified to account for the specificity of the UI integration problem. We provide an abstract component model to specify characteristics and behaviors of presentation components and propose an event-based composition model to specify the composition logic. Components and composition are described by means of a simple XML-based language, which is interpreted by a runtime middleware for the execution of the resulting composite application. A proof-of-concept prototype allows us to show that the proposed component model can also easily be applied to existing presentation components, built with different languages and/or component technologies.

TL;DR: The paper addresses the problem of the propagation of cohesionless debris flows, in which the erosion and sedimentation processes are important and the fixed bed assumption is not acceptable and the hyperbolic system is proposed.
