Abstract: The problem of how to distribute available resources among members of a group is a central aspect of social life. Adults react negatively to inequitable distributions and several studies have reported negative reactions to inequity also in non-human primates and dogs. We report two experiments on infants' reactions to equal and unequal distributions. In two experiments, infants' looking times and manual choices provide, for the first time, converging evidence suggesting that infants aged 12 to 18 months (mean age 16 months) attend to the outcomes of distributive actions to evaluate agents' actions and to reason about agents' dispositions. The results provide support for recent theoretical proposals on the developmental roots of social evaluation skills and a sense of fairness.

Abstract: A semi-implicit finite difference model based on the three-dimensional shallow water equations is modified to use unstructured grids. There are obvious advantages in using unstructured grids in problems with a complicated geometry. In this development, the concept of unstructured orthogonal grids is introduced and applied to this model. The governing differential equations are discretized by means of a semi-implicit algorithm that is robust, stable and very efficient. The resulting model is relatively simple, conserves mass, can fit complicated boundaries and yet is sufficiently flexible to permit local mesh refinements in areas of interest. Moreover, the simulation of the flooding and drying is included in a natural and straightforward manner. These features are illustrated by a test case for studies of convergence rates and by examples of flooding on a river plain and flow in a shallow estuary. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: Extended attribute profiles and extended multi-attribute profiles are presented for the analysis of hyperspectral high-resolution images. These extended profiles are based on morphological attribute filters and, through a multi-level analysis, are capable of extracting spatial features that can better model the spatial information, with respect to conventional extended morphological profiles. The features extracted by the proposed extended profiles were considered for a classification task. Two hyperspectral high-resolution datasets acquired for the city of Pavia, Italy, were considered in the analysis. The effectiveness of the introduced operators in modelling the spatial information was proved by the higher classification accuracies obtained with respect to those achieved by a conventional extended morphological profile.
