TLDR
The vast majority of men > or =50 years old initially diagnosed with iRBD in this study eventually developed a parkinsonian disorder/dementia, often after a prolonged interval from onset of iR BD, with the mean interval being 14 years while the range extended to 29 years.

Journal ArticleDOI

REM sleep behavior disorder in Parkinson's disease.

TL;DR: The clinical aspects, screening and diagnostic criteria as well as therapeutic aspects of RBD in PD patients are reviewed and pathophysiological pathways are briefly reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Neurophysiological basis of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder: informing future drug development

TL;DR: These findings suggest a gradual involvement of the brainstem and other structures, which is in line with the gradual involvement known in these disorders, and are proposed to help identify biomarkers of individuals at high risk of subsequent conversion to parkinsonism.
Journal ArticleDOI

Greatest rapid eye movement sleep atonia loss in men and older age.

TL;DR: Men and the elderly may be biologically predisposed to altered REM sleep muscle atonia control, and/or some may have occult neurodegenerative disease, possibly underlying the predominance of older men with REM sleep behavior disorder.
Journal ArticleDOI

REM sleep atonia loss distinguishes synucleinopathy in older adults with cognitive impairment

TL;DR: This study provides Class III evidence that quantitative RSWA analysis is useful for distinguishing cognitive impairment phenotypes and further studies with pathologic confirmation of dementia diagnoses are needed to confirm the diagnostic utility of RSWA in dementia.
Journal ArticleDOI

Assessing the role of nocturnal core body temperature dysregulation as a biomarker of neurodegeneration.

TL;DR: Thermoregulatory dysfunction is implicate as a potential early biomarker for development of rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder‐associated neurodegeneration, and subpopulations with differing pathological underpinnings might exist in Parkinson’s disease.

“Mini-mental state”: A practical method for grading the cognitive state of patients for the clinician

TL;DR: A simplified, scored form of the cognitive mental status examination, the “Mini-Mental State” (MMS) which includes eleven questions, requires only 5-10 min to administer, and is therefore practical to use serially and routinely.

A practical method for grading the cognitive state of patients for the clinician

TL;DR: The Mini-Mental State (MMS) as mentioned in this paper is a simplified version of the standard WAIS with eleven questions and requires only 5-10 min to administer, and is therefore practical to use serially and routinely.
Journal ArticleDOI

Staging of brain pathology related to sporadic Parkinson’s disease

TL;DR: This study traces the course of the pathology in incidental and symptomatic Parkinson cases proposing a staging procedure based upon the readily recognizable topographical extent of the lesions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Diagnosis and management of dementia with Lewy bodies: Third report of the DLB Consortium

Ian G. McKeith, +45 more
- 27 Dec 2005 -
TL;DR: The dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) Consortium has revised criteria for the clinical and pathologic diagnosis of DLB incorporating new information about the core clinical features and suggesting improved methods to assess them as mentioned in this paper.
