TLDR
The Emerging Technology Series as mentioned in this paper is a series of information and recommendations based on available test data, technical reports, limited experience with field applications, and the opinions of committee members, with a focus on the development and appropriate use of new and emerging technologies.Abstract:
*Co-chairs of the subcommittee that prepared this document. Note: The committee acknowledges the contribution of associate member Paul Kelley. ACI encourages the development and appropriate use of new and emerging technologies through the publication of the Emerging Technology Series. This series presents information and recommendations based on available test data, technical reports, limited experience with field applications, and the opinions of committee members. The presented information and recommendations, and their basis, may be less fully developed and tested than those for more mature technologies. This report identifies areas in which information is believed to be less fully developed, and describes research needs. The professional using this document should understand the limitations of this document and exercise judgment as to the appropriate application of this emerging technology.read more

Near-surface mounted FRP reinforcement: An emerging technique for strengthening structures
L. De Lorenzis,Jinguang Teng +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide a critical review of existing research in this area, identifies gaps of knowledge, and outlines directions for further research, including the optimization of construction details, models for the bond behaviour between NSM fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) and concrete, reliable design methods for flexural and shear strengthening, and the maximization of the advantages of this technique.

Refinement of a design-oriented stress-strain model for FRP-confined concrete
TL;DR: More accurate expressions for the ultimate axial strain and the compressive strength are proposed for use in this model in this paper, which can be easily incorporated into Lam and Teng's model for more accurate predictions.

Progress on understanding debonding problems in reinforced concrete and steel members strengthened using FRP composites
TL;DR: A review of the progress achieved in this area regarding applications to both reinforced concrete and steel members is provided in this paper, where the potential of brittle debonding failures is considered in the design process.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stress-strain model for concrete confined by FRP composites
TL;DR: In this article, a stress-strain model for concrete confined by fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is developed, based on the results of a comprehensive experimental program including large-scale circular, square and rectangular short columns confined by carbon/epoxy and E-glass/polyethylene (E-glass) jackets providing a wide range of confinement ratios.

Retrofit of Square Concrete Columns with Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer for Seismic Resistance
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the prospect of strengthening deficient and repairing damaged square reinforced concrete columns with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) jackets and found that added confinement with CFRP at critical locations enhanced ductility, energy dissipation capacity, and strength of all substandard members.

Concrete Encased in Fiberglass-Reinforced Plastic
TL;DR: In this article, the authors constructed FRP plain concrete composite members, in which an FRP casing is used as a form that stays permanently with the member, confining the concrete and acting as tensile reinforcement.

Seismic Strengthening of Circular Bridge Pier Models with Fiber Composites
TL;DR: In this article, an experimental study was conducted to examine the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete columns strengthened with fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composite straps, and the results revealed that the seismic resistance of retrofit concrete columns improves significantly due to the confining action of the FRP composite straps.
