TLDR
Robust cognitive deficits are present and familial in schizophrenia and psychotic bipolar disorder and Severity of cognitive impairments across psychotic disorders was consistent with a continuum model, in which more prominent affective features and less enduring psychosis were associated with less cognitive impairment.Abstract:
ObjectiveFamilial neuropsychological deficits are well established in schizophrenia but remain less well characterized in other psychotic disorders. This study from the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes (B-SNIP) consortium 1) compares cognitive impairment in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder with psychosis, 2) tests a continuum model of cognitive dysfunction in psychotic disorders, 3) reports familiality of cognitive impairments across psychotic disorders, and 4) evaluates cognitive impairment among nonpsychotic relatives with and without cluster A personality traits.MethodParticipants included probands with schizophrenia (N=293), psychotic bipolar disorder (N=227), schizoaffective disorder (manic, N=110; depressed, N=55), their first-degree relatives (N=316, N=259, N=133, and N=64, respectively), and healthy comparison subjects (N=295). All participants completed the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS) neuropsychological battery.ResultsCognitive impairments among...read more

Higher genetic risk of schizophrenia is associated with lower cognitive performance in healthy individuals

TL;DR: It is shown that common genetic risk factors for schizophrenia associate with lower performance in areas of cognition that are impaired in psychotic disorders but do not associate independently with educational attainment or more general measures of intelligence.

Mismatch negativity amplitude in first-degree relatives of individuals with psychotic disorders: Links with cognition and schizotypy.

TL;DR: This article found that MMN amplitude was intact in siblings compared to probands, and the amplitude was associated with cognition and schizotypal symptoms dimensionally across levels of familial risk, suggesting that the amplitude reductions do not reflect genetic risk for psychotic disorders per se, and instead emerge as a result of, or in conjunction with, clinical features associated with psychosis.

Neurocognitive Disorders in Aging: A Primer on DSM-5 Changes and Framework for Application to Practice
Jessica M. Foley,Andrew L. Heck +1 more
TL;DR: This article describes how cognitive screening can be embedded in an assessment framework that includes attention to symptom expression, normal aging, medical and psychiatric comorbidities, and base rates, and describes how this changes from DSM-IV to DSM-5.

Auditory mismatch negativity in bipolar disorder: a focused review.
TL;DR: The auditory mismatch negativity, a component of the event-related potential elicited by an unexpected stimulus in a sequence of acoustic stimuli, provides an objective measure of the accuracy of the echoic information processing of the human brain this article.

TL;DR: In this paper, the B-SNIP-based brain-based Biotypes for psychotic disorders have been validated by assessing differences in volume and shape of the amygdala and hippocampus contrasting traditional clinical diagnoses with Biotype classification.

The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) for Schizophrenia
TL;DR: Review of five studies involving the PANSS provided evidence of its criterion-related validity with antecedent, genealogical, and concurrent measures, its predictive validity, its drug sensitivity, and its utility for both typological and dimensional assessment.

A new depression scale designed to be sensitive to change.

TL;DR: The construction of a depression rating scale designed to be particularly sensitive to treatment effects is described, and its capacity to differentiate between responders and non-responders to antidepressant treatment was better than the HRS, indicating greater sensitivity to change.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple procedure for multiple tests of significance based on individual p-values is derived, which is sharper than Holm's (1979) sequentially rejective procedure.

Multipoint Quantitative-Trait Linkage Analysis in General Pedigrees
