TLDR
The Enterovirus genus is a prototype example of the Picornaviridae heterogeneity at both genetic and phenotypic levels and better characterization of these ubiquitous human pathogens may help to develop vaccines or antiviral treatments and to monitor the emergence of new strains.

Journal ArticleDOI

In vitro anti-enteroviral activity of stilbenoids isolated from the leaves of Macaranga barteri.

TL;DR: Vedelianin showed the best selectivity profile amongst the isolated compounds with selectivity index values of 31 and 216 against E7 and E19, respectively, and it is possible these compounds may be responsible for the traditional use of Macaranga barteri in the treatment of viral infections.
Journal ArticleDOI

Virus infections as potential targets of preventive treatments for type 1 diabetes.

TL;DR: There is increasing evidence for a group of enteroviruses acting as possible environmental key triggers for type 1 diabetes, and interest in the possible development of vaccines against these viruses has increased.
Journal ArticleDOI

Transient Compound Treatment Induces a Multigenerational Reduction of Oxysterol-Binding Protein (OSBP) Levels and Prophylactic Antiviral Activity.

TL;DR: The long-term, compound-induced reduction of OSBP in cells presents a new route to broad spectrum anti-Enterovirus activity, including as a novel route to antiviral prophylactic treatment through small molecule targeting a human host protein.
Journal ArticleDOI

Multiple enterovirus genotypes circulating in children hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in Thailand

TL;DR: The prevalence of EV infection with a wide variety of EV genotypes in children with acute diarrhea is reported, with an increase of detection rate in December-January and May-June.
Journal ArticleDOI

Rational design of highly potent broad-spectrum enterovirus inhibitors targeting the nonstructural protein 2C.

TL;DR: A structure-activity relationship study is presented of a previously identified compound that targets the 2C protein of EV-A71 and several EV-B species members, but not poliovirus (PV) (EV-C species), which is structurally related to the Food and Drug Administration-approved drug fluoxetine but has favorable chemical properties.

Virus taxonomy: classification and nomenclature of viruses. Seventh report of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses.

TL;DR: This report builds on the accumulated taxonomic construction of the eight previous reports dating back to 1971 and records the proceedings of the Committee since publication of the last report in 2005.
Journal ArticleDOI

Community study of role of viral infections in exacerbations of asthma in 9-11 year old children.

TL;DR: This study supports the hypothesis that upper respiratory viral infections are associated with 80-85% of asthma exacerbations in school age children.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mutation rates among RNA viruses

TL;DR: This work describes a simple relation between ribovirus mutation frequencies and mutation rates, applies it to the best (albeit far from satisfactory) available data, and observes a central value for the mutation rate per genome per replication of micro(g) approximately 0.76.
Journal ArticleDOI

Virology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, and control of enterovirus 71.

TL;DR: Enterovirus 71 is a major public health issue across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, with new outbreaks occurring across Asia in regular cycles, and virus gene subgroups seem to differ in clinical epidemiological properties.
