Statistical optics
TLDR
Development of this more comprehensive model of the behavior of light draws upon the use of tools traditionally available to the electrical engineer, such as linear system theory and the theory of stochastic processes.Abstract:
Course Description This is an advanced course in which we explore the field of Statistical Optics. Topics covered include such subjects as the statistical properties of natural (thermal) and laser light, spatial and temporal coherence, effects of partial coherence on optical imaging instruments, effects on imaging due to randomly inhomogeneous media, and a statistical treatment of the detection of light. Development of this more comprehensive model of the behavior of light draws upon the use of tools traditionally available to the electrical engineer, such as linear system theory and the theory of stochastic processes.read more

Exploiting the sparsity of edge information in synthetic aperture radar imagery for speckle reduction
TL;DR: A new technique is developed which incorporates both the statistical model of speckle and the a priori knowledge about the sparsity of edges present in the scene to visually improve the quality of SAR images.

Limitations of Segmented Wavefront Control Devices in Emulating Optical Turbulence
TL;DR: In this paper, the limitations of pixelation effects on a segmented wavefront control device were investigated theoretically, and the results of this analysis were then verified by simulation, and it was found that while LC SLMs with fine pixel resolution have almost no adverse effects from pixelation, segmented MEMS DMs have limitations related to the number of mirror segments on a DM.

What is resolution? A statistical minimax testing perspective on super-resolution microscopy
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a statistical description of resolution obtained from such random data, which is based on statistical testing whether one or two objects with the same total intensity are present.
