Statistical optics
TLDR
Development of this more comprehensive model of the behavior of light draws upon the use of tools traditionally available to the electrical engineer, such as linear system theory and the theory of stochastic processes.Abstract:
Course Description This is an advanced course in which we explore the field of Statistical Optics. Topics covered include such subjects as the statistical properties of natural (thermal) and laser light, spatial and temporal coherence, effects of partial coherence on optical imaging instruments, effects on imaging due to randomly inhomogeneous media, and a statistical treatment of the detection of light. Development of this more comprehensive model of the behavior of light draws upon the use of tools traditionally available to the electrical engineer, such as linear system theory and the theory of stochastic processes.read more

Continuous diffraction of molecules and disordered molecular crystals
Henry N. Chapman,Oleksandr Yefanov,Kartik Ayyer,Thomas A. White,Anton Barty,Andrew J. Morgan,Valerio Mariani,Dominik Oberthuer,Kanupriya Pande +8 more
TL;DR: Ayyer et al. as mentioned in this paper developed the analysis of the intensity statistics of such continuous diffraction to obtain parameters such as scaling, beam coherence and the number of contributing independent object orientations.

Physics-based polarimetric BRDF models
TL;DR: In this paper, a series of physics-based analytic models for the BRDF that describe the differential polarization of light scattered from a random rough surface was devised. But the results of these models are limited.

Two-Photon X-Ray Diffraction.
TL;DR: This work shows the breakdown of conventional x-ray diffraction theory for the fundamental case of a "source," consisting of a back-illuminated thin film in a circular aperture, and compares to and distinguished from the much studied case of entangled optical biphotons.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Semiclassical Theory of Superresolution for Two Incoherent Optical Point Sources
TL;DR: Using a semiclassical model of photodetection with Poissonian noise and insights from quantum metrology, the authors proved that linear optics and photon counting can optimally estimate the separation between two incoherent point sources without regard to Rayleigh's criterion.
