Statistical optics
TLDR
Development of this more comprehensive model of the behavior of light draws upon the use of tools traditionally available to the electrical engineer, such as linear system theory and the theory of stochastic processes.Abstract:
Course Description This is an advanced course in which we explore the field of Statistical Optics. Topics covered include such subjects as the statistical properties of natural (thermal) and laser light, spatial and temporal coherence, effects of partial coherence on optical imaging instruments, effects on imaging due to randomly inhomogeneous media, and a statistical treatment of the detection of light. Development of this more comprehensive model of the behavior of light draws upon the use of tools traditionally available to the electrical engineer, such as linear system theory and the theory of stochastic processes.read more

Performance-Metric Driven Atmospheric Compensation for Robust Free-Space Laser Communication
TL;DR: This result demonstrates that optimization of an atmospheric compensation system requires consideration of the metric of interest, and exploration of peak intensity tracking, which reduces fade probability by greater than 50% over conventional centroid trackers and Adaptive Optics (AO) systems for scenarios studied.

Laboratory implementation of partially coherent beams with super-Gaussian distribution
TL;DR: In this paper, a partially coherent beam with super-Gaussian far-field intensity distributions with the help of a reflection-type spatial light modulator is implemented for improving link performance in free-space optical communications.

Optical transfer function characterization using a weak diffuser
TL;DR: In this paper, a weak diffuser is used to recover the pupil of an imaging system in a single measurement, without exact knowledge of the diffuser's surface, and a linear theory based on the weak object approximations predicts the spectrum of the measured speckle intensity to depend directly on the pupil function.

Laser speckle reduction using a dynamic polymer-based diffraction grating spatial phase modulator
TL;DR: In this article, a dynamical flexible polymer-based diffraction grating phase modulator is used to reduce the undesired laser speckle in a laser display projector and measurement results indicate that the reduction in contrast is obtained by using a CCD camera with appropriate integration time to mimic the averaging action of human eye.
