Statistical optics
TLDR
Development of this more comprehensive model of the behavior of light draws upon the use of tools traditionally available to the electrical engineer, such as linear system theory and the theory of stochastic processes.Abstract:
Course Description This is an advanced course in which we explore the field of Statistical Optics. Topics covered include such subjects as the statistical properties of natural (thermal) and laser light, spatial and temporal coherence, effects of partial coherence on optical imaging instruments, effects on imaging due to randomly inhomogeneous media, and a statistical treatment of the detection of light. Development of this more comprehensive model of the behavior of light draws upon the use of tools traditionally available to the electrical engineer, such as linear system theory and the theory of stochastic processes.read more

"Wolf Shifts" and Their Physical Interpretation Under Laboratory Conditions.
TL;DR: It is shown that, under normal laboratory conditions and in the Fraunhofer approximation, the directional spectrum of light does not change on propagation in free space, and that each frequency component of the total spectrum is preserved in accordance with the principle of energy conservation.

Superluminal signals: an engineer's perspective
TL;DR: In this paper, a case study of a raised cosine signal is presented to investigate the practical relevance of superluminal signals with evanescent waveguide modes, and the still ongoing debate concerning the definition of an appropriate signal velocity is revisited.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quadrature Errors and DC Offsets Calibration of Analog Complex Cross-Correlator for Interferometric Passive Millimeter-Wave Imaging Applications.
TL;DR: An analog complex cross-correlator with output DC offsets and amplitudes calibration capability is proposed for interferometric passive millimeter-wave security sensing applications and a quadrature errors calibration algorithm is described in order to improve the output phase accuracy of the correlator.

The influence of multiple scattering in incoherent ultrasonic inspection of coarse grain stainless steel
TL;DR: In this paper, a method to characterize the incoherent component of the echographic signal is proposed, and it is shown that a multiple scattering process is generated by these materials.
Journal ArticleDOI
Degrees of freedom of polychromatic images
TL;DR: In this paper, a modal decomposition of scattered fields is used to estimate the information passed by band-limited diffraction from an object to the far field, and the transinformation is shown to increase with the number of frequencies in the probe field.
