Zika Virus Infection during Pregnancy in Mice Causes Placental Damage and Fetal Demise.

TLDR
These models will facilitate the study of ZIKV pathogenesis, in utero transmission, and testing of therapies and vaccines to prevent congenital malformations and to identify ZikV within trophoblasts of the maternal and fetal placenta, consistent with a trans-placental infection route.

Shared and Distinct Functions of Type I and Type III Interferons.

TL;DR: A model wherein type III IFNs serve as a front-line defense that controls infection at epithelial barriers while minimizing damaging inflammatory responses, reserving the more potent type I IFN response for when local responses are insufficient is discussed.

Identification of small-molecule inhibitors of Zika virus infection and induced neural cell death via a drug repurposing screen

TL;DR: A pan-caspase inhibitor, emricasan, inhibited ZIKV-induced increases in caspase-3 activity and protected human cortical neural progenitors in both monolayer and three-dimensional organoid cultures, and combination treatments using one compound from each category (neuroprotective and antiviral) further increased protection of human neural progensitors and astrocytes from ZIKv-induced cell death.

An update on Zika virus infection

TL;DR: This Review focuses on important updates and gaps in the knowledge of Zika virus as of early 2017, which have been reported in continental USA, Africa, and southeast Asia.

From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

TL;DR: This report summarizes the clinical features of these cases and the epidemiologic investigations by the Texas Department of Health and the New Jersey State Department of health and Senior Services, which indicated that a bat-associated variant of the rabies virus was responsible for infection in both cases.

Zika Virus Associated with Microcephaly

TL;DR: The case of an expectant mother who had a febrile illness with rash at the end of the first trimester of pregnancy while she was living in Brazil and revealed microcephaly with calcifications in the fetal brain and placenta is described.
Journal ArticleDOI

Genetic and Serologic Properties of Zika Virus Associated with an Epidemic, Yap State, Micronesia, 2007

TL;DR: The full coding region nucleic acid sequence and serologic properties of the virus were identified and the virus was identified as Crimean-Congo-Wales coronavirus.

Zika Virus and Birth Defects — Reviewing the Evidence for Causality

TL;DR: It is concluded that a causal relationship exists between prenatal Zika virus infection and microcephaly and other serious brain anomalies and needs to intensify efforts toward the prevention of adverse outcomes caused by congenital Zika virus infections.
