TL;DR: Because large-diameter trees constitute roughly half of the mature forest biomass worldwide, their dynamics and sensitivities to environmental change represent potentially large controls on global forest carbon cycling.

TL;DR: ForestGEO as discussed by the authors is a network of scientists and long-term forest dynamics plots (FDPs) spanning the Earth's major forest types, which together provide a holistic view of forest functioning.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plant functional traits suggest novel ecological strategy for an invasive shrub in an understorey woody plant community
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the functional traits of an invasive shrub species, Elaeagnus umbellata, to those of the understorey native woody plant community in a southeast Michigan forest.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: In this article, the abundance of N-fixing trees in a network of forest plots spanning five continents, ~5,000 tree species and ~4 million trees was analyzed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mutualisms and Population Regulation: Mechanism Matters
TL;DR: This study demonstrates that the management of mutualism-based ecosystem services requires a mechanistic understanding of mutualistic interactions, and demonstrates the counter intuitive demonstration that preserving ant participation in the ant-hemipteran mutualism may be the best way of insuring pest control.
