Genomic Epidemiology of Complex, Multispecies, Plasmid-Borne bla KPC Carbapenemase in Enterobacterales in the United Kingdom from 2009 to 2014
Nicole Stoesser,Hang T. T. Phan,Hang T. T. Phan,Anna C. Seale,Anna C. Seale,Zoie Aiken,Stephanie Thomas,Matthew Smith,David H. Wyllie,Ryan George,Robert Sebra,Amy J. Mathers,Alison Vaughan,Tim E. A. Peto,Matthew J. Ellington,Katie L. Hopkins,Derrick W. Crook,Alex Orlek,William Welfare,Julie Cawthorne,Cheryl Lenney,Andrew Dodgson,Neil Woodford,A. Sarah Walker +23 more
TL;DR: The dissemination of blaKPC has evolved to be polyclonal and polyspecies, but the genetic mechanisms underpinning this evolution have not been elucidated in detail and substantial genomic plasticity observed has important implications for the understanding of the epidemiology of transmissible carbapenem resistance in Enterobacterales.
Journal ArticleDOI
A molecular analysis of Greek and UK Haemophilus influenzae conjugative resistance plasmids.
TL;DR: All plasmids of 10 beta-lactamase-positive, ampicillin-resistant strains, two from the UK and eight from Greece, were investigated and shared a high degree of sequence homology suggesting that plasmid of diverse geographical origin are highly related.

Virus detection and identification in minutes using single-particle imaging and deep learning
Nicolas Shiaelis,Alexander Tometzki,Leon Peto,Andrew P. McMahon,Christof Hepp,Erica Bickerton,Cyril Favard,Delphine Muriaux,Monique Andersson,Sarah Oakley,Alison Vaughan,Philippa C Matthews,Nicole Stoesser,Derrick W. Crook,Achillefs N. Kapanidis,Nicole C. Robb,Nicole C. Robb +16 more
TL;DR: A methodology for virus detection and identification that uses a convolutional neural network to distinguish between microscopy images of single intact particles of different viruses, which achieves labeling, imaging and virus identification in less than five minutes and does not require any lysis, purification or amplification steps.
Journal ArticleDOI
Common NFKBIL2 polymorphisms and susceptibility to pneumococcal disease: a genetic association study
Stephen J Chapman,Chiea Chuen Khor,Chiea Chuen Khor,Fredrik O. Vannberg,Anna Rautanen,Andrew Walley,Andrew Walley,Shelley Segal,Catrin E. Moore,Catrin E. Moore,Robert J O Davies,Nicholas P. J. Day,Norbert Peshu,Derrick W. Crook,James A. Berkley,Thomas N. Williams,J A Scott,Adrian V. S. Hill +17 more
TL;DR: Common NFKBIL2 polymorphisms are associated with susceptibility to invasive pneumococcal disease in European and African populations, and these findings further highlight the importance of control of NF-κB in host defence against pneumococCal disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genomic network analysis of environmental and livestock F-type plasmid populations
William Matlock,Kevin K Chau,Manal AbuOun,Emma Stubberfield,Leanne Barker,James Kavanagh,H Pickford,Daniel Gilson,Richard P. Smith,Hyun S. Gweon,Sarah Hoosdally,Jeremy Swann,Robert Sebra,Mark J. Bailey,Peto Tea.,Derrick W. Crook,Muna F. Anjum,Daniel S. Read,Anne-Sophie Walker,Nicole Stoesser,Liam P. Shaw,Howard Brett,Michael J. Bowes,N De Maio,Nicholas A. Duggett,Daniel J. Wilson,Alasdair T. M. Hubbard,H Jones,Anna E. Sheppard,Neil Woodford +29 more
TL;DR: A network community analysis of a large survey of F- type plasmids from environmental and livestock settings suggests that stable F-type plasmid backbone structures can persist in environmental settings while allowing dramatic variation in accessory gene content that may be linked to niche adaptation.
