Crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are formed by reticular synthesis, which creates strong bonds between inorganic and organic units. Careful selection of MOF constituents can yield crystals of ultrahigh porosity and high thermal and chemical stability. These characteristics allow the interior of MOFs to be chemically altered for use in gas separation, gas storage, and catalysis, among other applications. The precision commonly exercised in their chemical modification and the ability to expand their metrics without changing the underlying topology have not been achieved with other solids. MOFs whose chemical composition and shape of building units can be multiply varied within a particular structure already exist and may lead to materials that offer a synergistic combination of properties.

The Chemistry and Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) display a wide range of luminescent behaviors resulting from the multifaceted nature of their structure. In this critical review we discuss the origins of MOF luminosity, which include the linker, the coordinated metal ions, antenna effects, excimer and exciplex formation, and guest molecules. The literature describing these effects is comprehensively surveyed, including a categorization of each report according to the type of luminescence observed. Finally, we discuss potential applications of luminescent MOFs. This review will be of interest to researchers and synthetic chemists attempting to design luminescent MOFs, and those engaged in the extension of MOFs to applications such as chemical, biological, and radiation detection, medical imaging, and electro-optical devices (141 references).

Luminescent Metal–Organic Frameworks

The accidental discovery of the anticancer properties of cisplatin and its clinical introduction in the 1970s represent a major landmark in the history of successful anticancer drugs. Although carboplatin--a second-generation analogue that is safer but shows a similar spectrum of activity to cisplatin--was introduced in the 1980s, the pace of further improvements slowed for many years. However, in the past several years interest in platinum drugs has increased. Key developments include the elucidation of mechanisms of tumour resistance to these drugs, the introduction of new platinum-based agents (oxaliplatin, satraplatin and picoplatin), and clinical combination studies using platinum drugs with resistance modulators or new molecularly targeted drugs.

The resurgence of platinum-based cancer chemotherapy

Bis(2,3-dimethylbutenyl)sulfanes, the products of sulfane addition to 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene and of the reaction of sulfur with 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene.

The title compound, [Fe(C 12 H 8 N 3 O 2 ) 2 ]ClO 4 ·2C 2 H 3 N, contains Fe III in a distorted octahedral coordination environment, with the Fe-N(pyridine) bonds significantly longer than the Fe-N(amine) bonds. The crystal packing involves a bifurcated CH···(O,O) contact that is also found in all other [M(C 12 H 8 N 3 O 2 ) 2 ] complexes reported previously.

The chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin enjoys the status of one of the world's best-selling anticancer drugs. As is the case with other chemotherapeutic drugs, however, cisplatin has its drawbacks, including intrinsic or acquired resistance and toxicity. Efforts to mitigate cisplatin's drawbacks have inspired the synthesis of myriad analogs, but with only a handful that have been shown to be acceptable for clinical application. Increased understanding of the mechanism of the action of cisplatin, as a result of decades of research, is leading to a more rational design of new platinum drugs. However, the incomplete puzzle of cisplatin's ways and the lack of a single decisive biological target for anticancer treatment still complicate the search for improved platinum drugs. This article gives a brief introduction to cisplatin, and subsequently summarizes and evaluates the development of cisplatin derivatives and possible new approaches.

Structure of poly‐diaqua‐bis(μ‐4,4'‐bi‐1,2,4‐triazole‐N1,N1')‐manganese(II) dinitrate dihydrate

Copper(II) and nickel(II) compounds with (S)-(+)-1-amino-2-propanol (S-ap) are described and compared with the corresponding compounds containing racemic 1-amino-2-propanol ((RS)-ap) previously reported. Both ligands give analogous coordination compounds, except in the case of the chlorides of formula MCl2(ap)2, which are only obtained with (RS)-ap. Similar differences were found in solution using conductometric titrations. Infrared and ligand field spectra for the racemic and optically active compounds are almost identical. Circular dichroism spectra show that Λ(δδδ) is the most stable configuration for the tris-chelates. For the bis-compounds the ligands could be assigned to cis- or trans-positions by comparing the rotational strength of the d-d transitions. In addition, the different melting points of the isomers are related to their different geometries. The comparison further indicates that in compounds with monodentate coordinating ap ligands steric hindrance is less important in the case of the compounds containing S-ap.
