Key indicators of Arctic climate change : 1971–2017
Jason E. Box,William Colgan,Torben R. Christensen,Torben R. Christensen,Niels Martin Schmidt,Magnus Lund,Frans-Jan W. Parmentier,Frans-Jan W. Parmentier,Ross Brown,Uma S. Bhatt,Eugénie S. Euskirchen,Vladimir E. Romanovsky,John Walsh,James E. Overland,Muyin Wang,Muyin Wang,Robert W. Corell,Walter N. Meier,Bert Wouters,Bert Wouters,Sebastian H. Mernild,Sebastian H. Mernild,Sebastian H. Mernild,Johanna Mård,Janet Pawlak,Morten Skovgård Olsen +25 more
TL;DR: In this article, key observational indicators of climate change in the Arctic, most spanning a 47-year period (1971-2017) demonstrate fundamental changes among nine key elements of the Arctic system.
Journal ArticleDOI
Joint control of terrestrial gross primary productivity by plant phenology and physiology
Jianyang Xia,Shuli Niu,Philippe Ciais,Ivan A. Janssens,Jiquan Chen,Christof Ammann,Altaf Arain,Peter D. Blanken,Alessandro Cescatti,Damien Bonal,Nina Buchmann,Peter James Curtis,Shiping Chen,Jinwei Dong,Lawrence B. Flanagan,Christian Frankenberg,Teodoro Georgiadis,Christopher M. Suyker,Marek Urbaniak,Francesco Primo Vaccari,Andrej Varlagin,Timo Vesala,Matthew Wilkinson,Ensheng Weng,Georg Wohlfahrt,Liming Yan,Yiqi Luo,Yiqi Luo +43 more
TL;DR: It is found that plant phenological and physiological properties can be integrated in a robust index—the product of the length of CO2 uptake period and the seasonal maximal photosynthesis—to explain the GPP variability over space and time in response to climate extremes and during recovery after disturbance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Variability in exchange of CO2 across 12 northern peatland and tundra sites
Magnus Lund,Peter M. Lafleur,Nigel T. Roulet,Anders Lindroth,Torben R. Christensen,Mika Aurela,Bogdan H. Chojnicki,Lawrence B. Flanagan,Elyn Humphreys,Tuomas Laurila,Walter C. Oechel,Janusz Olejnik,Janne Rinne,Per Schubert,Mats Nilsson +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the average summertime net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) was highly variable between sites, and all sites with complete annual datasets, seven in total, acted as annual net sinks for atmospheric CO2.
Journal ArticleDOI
Large loss of CO2 in winter observed across the northern permafrost region
Susan M. Natali,Jennifer D. Watts,Brendan M. Rogers,S. Potter,S. Ludwig,A. K. Selbmann,Patrick F. Sullivan,Benjamin W. Abbott,Kyle A. Arndt,Leah Birch,Mats P. Björkman,A. Waldrop,Yihui Wang,Jeffrey M. Welker,Jeffrey M. Welker,Christian Wille,Xiaofeng Xu,Zhen Zhang,Qianlai Zhuang,Donatella Zona,Donatella Zona +81 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors synthesize regional in situ observations of CO2 flux from Arctic and boreal soils to assess current and future winter carbon losses from the northern permafrost domain.
Journal ArticleDOI
The uncertain climate footprint of wetlands under human pressure
A.M.R. Petrescu,Annalea Lohila,Juha-Pekka Tuovinen,Dennis D. Baldocchi,Ankur R. Desai,Nigel T. Roulet,Timo Vesala,A. J. Dolman,Walter C. Christensen,Mikkel P. Tamstorf,Mikhail Mastepanov,Mikhail Mastepanov,Pertti J. Martikainen,Shashi B. Verma,Christian Bernhofer,Alessandro Cescatti +49 more
TL;DR: The results quantify the role of human activities on the climate footprint of northern wetlands and call for development of active mitigation strategies for managed wetlands and new guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change accounting for both sustained CH4 emissions and cumulative CO2 exchange.
