Enterotypes of the human gut microbiome
Manimozhiyan Arumugam,Jeroen Raes,Eric Pelletier,Denis Le Paslier,Takuji Yamada,Daniel R. Mende,Gabriel Fernandes,Julien Tap,Thomas Brüls,Jean-Michel Batto,Marcelo Bertalan,Natalia Borruel,Francesc Casellas,Leyden Fernández,Laurent Gautier,Torben Hansen,Masahira Hattori,Tetsuya Hayashi,Michiel Kleerebezem,Ken Kurokawa,Marion Leclerc,Florence Levenez,Chaysavanh Manichanh,H. Zoetendal,Jun Wang,Francisco Guarner,Oluf Pedersen,Willem M. de Vos,Søren Brunak,Joël Doré,Jean Weissenbach,S. Dusko Ehrlich,Peer Bork +41 more
TL;DR: Three robust clusters (referred to as enterotypes hereafter) are identified that are not nation or continent specific and confirmed in two published, larger cohorts, indicating that intestinal microbiota variation is generally stratified, not continuous.
Journal ArticleDOI
Richness of human gut microbiome correlates with metabolic markers
Trine Nielsen,Junjie Qin,Edi Prifti,Falk Hildebrand,Gwen Falony,Mathieu Almeida,Manimozhiyan Arumugam,Jean-Michel Batto,Sean Kennedy,Pierre Leonard,Junhua Li,Kristoffer Sølvsten Burgdorf,Niels Grarup,Torben Jørgensen,Torben Jørgensen,Torben Jørgensen,Ivan Brandslund,Henrik Nielsen,Agnieszka S. Dusko Ehrlich,Oluf Pedersen +46 more
TL;DR: The authors' classifications based on variation in the gut microbiome identify subsets of individuals in the general white adult population who may be at increased risk of progressing to adiposity-associated co-morbidities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Complete genome sequence of Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1
Michiel Kleerebezem,Jos Boekhorst,Richard van Kranenburg,Douwe Molenaar,Oscar P. Kuipers,R.J. Leer,Renato Tarchini,Sander Peters,Hans Sandbrink,Mark Fiers,Willem J. Stiekema,René Klein Lankhorst,Peter A. Bron,Sally M. Hoffer,Masja Nierop Groot,Robert Kerkhoven,Maaike C. de Vries,Björn M. Ursing,Willem M. de Vos,Roland J. Siezen +19 more
TL;DR: The 3,308,274-bp sequence of the chromosome of Lactobacillus plantarum strain WCFS1, a single colony isolate of strain NCIMB8826 that was originally isolated from human saliva, has been determined, and contains 3,052 predicted protein-encoding genes, suggesting that these genes form a lifestyle adaptation region in the chromosome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quorum sensing by peptide pheromones and two-component signal-transduction systems in Gram-positive bacteria
TL;DR: Cell‐density‐dependent gene expression appears to be widely spread in bacteria, and genetic linkage of the common elements involved results in autoregulation of peptide‐pheromone production.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quorum sensing-controlled gene expression in lactic acid bacteria
TL;DR: Efficient nisin-controlled expression (NICE) systems were developed for several different lactic acid bacteria and a promising application of the NICE system is the development of autolytic starter lactococci, which will lyse in an early stage during cheese ripening thereby facilitating the release of intracellular enzymes which can contribute to flavour formation.
