TL;DR: Key findings include the identification of a functional DNA methylation tool kit; hymenopteran-specific genes including diverse venoms; lateral gene transfers among Pox viruses, Wolbachia, and Nasonia; and the rapid evolution of genes involved in nuclear-mitochondrial interactions that are implicated in speciation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evolutionary History of the Hymenoptera
Ralph S. Peters,Lars Krogmann,Christoph Mayer,Alexander Donath,Simon Gunkel,Karen Meusemann,Alexey M. Kozlov,Lars Podsiadlowski,Malte Petersen,Robert Lanfear,Patricia A. Diez,John M. Heraty,Karl M. Kjer,Seraina Klopfstein,Rudolf Meier,Carlo Polidori,Thomas Schmitt,Shanlin Liu,Xin Zhou,Torsten Wappler,Jes Rust,Bernhard Misof,Oliver Niehuis,Oliver Niehuis +23 more
TL;DR: The results reveal that the extant sawfly diversity is largely the result of a previously unrecognized major radiation of phytophagous Hymenoptera that did not lead to wood-dwelling and parasitoidism.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Lateral suppressor (Ls) gene of tomato encodes a new member of the VHIID protein family
TL;DR: The isolation of the Lateral suppressor gene by positional cloning is reported and it is shown that the mutant phenotype is caused by a complete loss of function of a new member of the VHIID family of plant regulatory proteins.
Journal ArticleDOI
What do we need to know about speciation
Roger K. Butlin,Allan Debelle,Claudius Kerth,Rhonda R. Snook,Leo W. Beukeboom,Ruth F Castillo Cajas,Wenwen Diao,Martine E. Maan,Silvia Paolucci,Franz J. Ritchie,Daniel Barker,Elina Immonen,Mark Kirkpatrick,Mohamed A. F. Noor,Constantino Macías Garcia,Thomas Schmitt,Menno Schilthuizen +25 more
TL;DR: A distillation of questions about the mechanisms of speciation, the genetic basis of speciating and the relationship between speciation and diversity are presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Surface hydrocarbons of queen eggs regulate worker reproduction in a social insect
Annett Endler,Jürgen Liebig,Thomas Schmitt,J. Parker,Graeme R. Jones,Peter Schreier,Bert Hölldobler +6 more
TL;DR: Queen-derived hydrocarbon labels inform workers about the presence of a fertile queen and thereby regulate worker reproduction, which induces workers to refrain from reproducing.
