Developing scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning through faculty learning communities

Abstract: The scholarship of teaching and learning has been a primary motivator and focus of faculty learning communities. This chapter reports on the strategies, processes, and activities that foster this scholarship in FLCs.

Implications of soluble tannin-protein complexes for tannin analysis and plant defense mechanisms.

Abstract: Factors which establish whether tannin and protein interact to form soluble complexes or precipitates were identified. The ratio of tannin to protein in the reaction mixture influenced solubility of the tannin-protein complexes. At protein-to-tannin ratios larger than the optimum ratio, or equivalence point, soluble tannin-protein complexes apparently formed instead of insoluble complexes. Several other factors influenced the amount of protein precipitated by tannin-containing plant extracts, including the length of the reaction time and the conditions of the tannin extraction. The analytical and ecological significances of soluble complexes were considered. A titration method which allows simultaneous determination of the equivalence point and assessment of the protein-precipitating capacity of any plant extract was developed. It was postulated that in vivo, tannin and protein may not only form insoluble complexes with antinutritional effects, but may also form soluble complexes which have unknown metabolic effects.

Learning by Doing: Cross-Border Mergers and Acquisitions

Abstract: We rely on organizational learning theory and strategic momentum research to examine the international merger and acquisition (M&A) activities of a sample of S&P 500 firms. We hypothesize that the learning associated with a firm's prior acquisition experience increases the likelihood the firm will engage in subsequent international acquisitions. Results from a sample including company-country level data indicate that both prior domestic acquisitions and international acquisitions influence the likelihood of acquisitions in foreign markets by U.S.-based firms. We also find that prior experience with international acquisitions is more predictive of subsequent international acquisitions than prior domestic acquisition experience. Moreover, we find that the acquisition experience within a host country had a stronger influence on subsequent acquisitions within that country than other prior non-host country international acquisition experiences.
