Abstract: The general principles and special components of beamed microwave power transmission systems are outlined, and their application to the space program is discussed. For a beamed system starting with a DC source of power, converting it to a microwave beam for transmission through space, and ending with DC power output at the receiving end, an experimentally measured and certified DC-to-DC efficiency of 54% has been achieved. The application that is discussed in detail is a low-earth-orbit-to-geostationary-orbit (LEO to GEO) transportation system that depends on vehicles propelled by electric thrusters whose power is supplied by a microwave beam originating at the earth's surface. A scenario for such a system is chosen, and the performance results are presented. The advantages of the all electronic system over a chemically propelled system are enumerated. The principles of space propulsion, particularly as they relate to electric propulsion, are outlined. Key components at the terminals of the system are discussed. Environmental considerations are discussed. >

Abstract: A wireless power transmission system including at least one source of electromagnetic radiation, a plurality of wireless power receivers that receive radiated electromagnetic energy, a beacon collocated with each wireless power receiver, wherein the beacon generates and radiates a pilot signal when the beacon is in an active state, and an array of transmitting antennas connected to the source of electromagnetic radiation that radiates the electromagnetic radiation in the direction of the beacon in the active state. The electromagnetic radiation can be electronically steered from one wireless power receiver to another by activating and deactivating the beacons collocated with each wireless power receiver.

Abstract: Estimates of rain rate from the precipitation radar (PR) aboard the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite require a means by which the radar signal attenuation can be corrected. One of the methods available is the surface reference technique in which the radar surface return in rain-free areas is used as a reference against which the path-integrated attenuation is obtained. Despite the simplicity of the basic concept, an assessment of the reliability of the technique is difficult because the statistical properties of the surface return depend not only on surface type (land/ocean) and incidence angle, but on the detailed nature of the surface scattering. In this paper, a formulation of the technique and a description of several surface reference datasets that are used in the operational algorithm are presented. Applications of the method to measurements from the PR suggest that it performs relatively well over the ocean in moderate to heavy rains. An indication of the reliability of...

Abstract: In a method of identifying an object from a digitized image that is particularly applicable to the classification of aircraft, the digitized image (152) of an unknown object is represented as a set of radial vectors (150₁, 150₂, ..). The vectors (150) are normalized and then compared with a library (18) containing normalized digitized images of known objects. The unknown object is thereby identified as being similar to the known object corresponding to the library image most closely matching the image of the unknown object. A score for the comparison of the unknown object silhouette with a known silhouette is obtained by subtracting the radial vectors of the known silhouette from those of the unknown silhouette, and summing the differences. The closest match is the smallest sum of difference.
