TL;DR: The genetic trends observed for the regression coefficients related to general production level and specific ability to respond to heat stress indicate that the dairy Gir population is heading toward a higher production level at the expense of lower tolerance toHeat stress.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed equations to estimate the dry matter intake (DMI) and nutrients requeriments for the feedlot sheep, on brazilian conditions, and revealed a system for sheep diets adequation.
Abstract: This work developed equations to estimate the dry matter intake (DMI) and nutrients requeriments for the feedlot sheep, on brazilian conditions, and revealed a system for sheep diets adequation. An extensive literature revision was done and the data were used as input on equations attainment from sheep with body weight between 20 and 40kg, kept in feedlot and submitted to diets with 30% of concentrate, at least. For the maintenance energy requeriments estimatives, average values were considered according to lower data available on national literature. The estimative equation choice for dry matter was realized from significance (P) and determination coefficient (R2) values, after variance and regression analysis. For estimating DMI was obtained the following equation: DMI (kg/animal/day) = 0.311 + (0.0197*BW) + (0.682 * ADG), that estimates DMI of 0.81 and 0.94kg/animal/day, respectively, for the animals with 20 of body weight and ADG of 150 and 350 g. For the maintenance energy requirement there was a metabolic weight/day value of 57 Kcal/kg. By equations for calculating nutrients requirements, TDN and CP of 510 and 890g and of 99 and 173 g/day, respectively, was predicted for the animals with 20kg of body weight and gain of 150 and 350 g/day.

TL;DR: The results indicate that A. verrucosa can change the ants' attraction according to EFN secretion during the ontogenic stages of the fruits, probably secreting more nectar when the biotic defense are more necessary for the protection of the fruit and the plant as a whole.
Abstract: In this study, we evaluate the temporal variation in extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) secretion in different ontogenic stages of Alibertia verrucosa (Rubiaceae) fruits in a Neotropical savanna. We observe greater nectar secretion rate in fruits of intermediate size compared with young or ripe fruit, indicating that they are possibly more protected by ants. In addition, the nectar secretion was higher at night, a pattern that could be associated with an increase of herbivore pressure and water stress during the daylight hours. In fact, due to the high temperature and low humidity during the day in savannas, most herbivores display strong nocturnal activity, and plants can avoid nectar secretion in this period. Our results indicate that A. verrucosa can change the ants' attraction according to EFN secretion during the ontogenic stages of the fruits, probably secreting more nectar when the biotic defense are more necessary for the protection of the fruits and the plant as a whole.

TL;DR: Investigation of embryo structure in E. pyriformis seeds and the ultra-structural changes that result from drying, germination and storage found structured content and hydrolysis of reserves changed, which also occurred as the seeds aged.
Abstract: Eugenia pyriformis Camb. is a tree species of medium height that produces savory fruits with large thin-coated seeds. These seeds quickly lose viability when submitted to desiccation. Our aim was to investigate embryo structure in E. pyriformis seeds and the ultra-structural changes that result from drying, germination and storage. The axis was less than 1.0 mm long, while the fleshy cotyledons varied from 1.0 to 2.0 cm. The apical and radicular meristem lie in opposing positions. There is a procambium and a medulla of parenchymatous nature, rich in starch grains. Leafy primordia were identified around the stem meristem and there were unicellular trichomes and stomata on the adaxial epidermis of the cotyledons. The gradual desiccation of the seeds provoked cellular structure disarrangement, which also occurred as the seeds aged. Apical meristem form changed from concave to conical during germination and the radicular hypocotyl axis became elongated, with root protrusion. In this phase, the cells have structured content and hydrolysis of reserves. Seed water content variation was evaluated and the physiological consequences of this change are discussed.
