TL;DR: The hypothesis that soil contamination by mercury alters community structure of root endophytic fungi in terms of composition, abundance and species richness is confirmed.
Abstract: The endophytic fungal communities of Polygonum acuminatum and Aeschynomene fluminensis were examined with respect to soil mercury (Hg) contamination. Plants were collected in places with and without Hg+2 for isolation and identification of their endophytic root fungi. We evaluated frequency of colonization, number of isolates and richness, indices of diversity and similarity, functional traits (hydrolytic enzymes, siderophores, indoleacetic acid, antibiosis and metal tolerance) and growth promotion of Aeschynomene fluminensis inoculated with endophytic fungi on soil with mercury. The frequency of colonization, structure and community function, as well as the abundant distribution of taxa of endophytic fungi were influenced by mercury contamination, with higher endophytic fungi in hosts in soil with mercury. The presence or absence of mercury in the soil changes the profile of the functional characteristics of the endophytic fungal community. On the other hand, tolerance of lineages to multiple metals is not associated with contamination. A. fluminensis depends on its endophytic fungi, since plants free of endophytic fungi grew less than expected due to mercury toxicity. In contrast plants containing certain endophytic fungi showed good growth in soil containing mercury, even exceeding growth of plants cultivated in soil without mercury. The data obtained confirm the hypothesis that soil contamination by mercury alters community structure of root endophytic fungi in terms of composition, abundance and species richness. The inoculation of A. fluminensis with certain strains of stress tolerant endophytic fungi contribute to colonization and establishment of the host and may be used in processes that aim to improve phytoremediation of soils with toxic concentrations of mercury.

TL;DR: In this paper, two randomized controlled trials comparing drugs for treating people with paracoccidioidomycosis were conducted and two authors independently assessed trial eligibility and risk of bias and extracted data, including adverse events.
Abstract: Background Paracoccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection that occurs only in some particular places in Latin America. Treatment is long, the drugs have side effects, and patients can relapse. However, the disease is potentially fatal. Objectives To evaluate drugs for treating paracoccidioidomycosis. Search methods We searched the following databases: Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group Specialized Register (March 2011); Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), published in The Cochrane Library (2011, Issue 1); PubMed (1966 to March 2011); EMBASE (1974 to March 2011); and LILACS (1982 to March 2011) Selection criteria Randomized controlled trials comparing drugs for treating people with paracoccidioidomycosis. Data collection and analysis Two authors independently assessed trial eligibility and risk of bias, and extracted data, including adverse events. Main results Two trials, one with 42 participants and another with 53 participants met the inclusion criteria. Risk of bias in the two trials was high, but most patients showed considerable clinical and mycological improvement. The first trial compared imidazoles (itraconazole and ketoconazole) with sulfadiazine (n=42). No difference was detected for cure (RR 0.77, 95% CI 0.52 to 1.16) or clinical improvement, or serological titres after 10 months of treatment, and there was no difference detected in adverse events. The second compared voriconazole with itraconazole (n=53) and did not demonstrate a difference in response. Two patients were withdrawn from voriconazole due to raised liver enzymes. Authors' conclusions The small number of participants and the short follow-up period impede definitive conclusions on comparative effects.

TL;DR: NNIS, albumin, CRP and IL-6 may be useful as predictive markers for postoperative infections and for predicting LOS, malignant condition, transferrin, band-aids and albumin are useful.
Abstract: CONTEXTO E OBJETIVO: Melhores resultados sao esperados quando infeccao pos-operatoria e diagnosticada precocemente.

TL;DR: The analysis of the mortality indicates that the fishing is a source of mortality more important for the Barbado than for the other species.
Abstract: The length structure of the stocks of four species of large Pimelodidae catfishes was used to study the dynamics of their populations in the Cuiaba river basin, north Pantanal. The estimative of the growth parameters, recruitment and mortality rates for the species were obtained. Among the species studied the Barbado presented the fastest growth than the others. The Pintado, Cachara and Jau exhibited similar growth rate. For the Barbado and the Pintado we observed two annual picks of recruitment, however the Cachara and the Jau presented a single annual pick. The analysis of the mortality indicates that the fishing is a source of mortality more important for the Barbado than for the other species.

TL;DR: The results confirm that do not have breed, sex or age predisposition to ehrlichiosis due E. canis, while the lowest occurrence of reactive dogs indoors probably related to low tick infestation, although no significant difference between dogs with or without infestation with the tick vector.
Abstract: Canine ehrlichiosis is a disease transmitted by ticks Rhipicephalus sanguineus and caused by Ehrlichia canis, obligatory intracellular bacteria. The present study examined the prevalence of anti-E. canis in 254 dogs from four administrative regions of Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, by indirect immunofluorescence assay. There was a prevalence of 42.5% (108/254) without significant difference between the studied regions. The variables age, breed, sex, habitat, access to rural and ticks were analyzed. The antibody titers ranged from 1:40 to 1:2,560. Only 32 (29.63%) seropositive dogs were infested with ticks, all R. sanguineus. The results confirm that do not have breed, sex or age predisposition to ehrlichiosis due E. canis, while the lowest occurrence of reactive dogs indoors probably related to low tick infestation, although no significant difference between dogs with or without infestation with the tick vector.
