TL;DR: Chitin, a nitrogen-containing polysaccharide which is a major component of the exoskeletons of arthropods, was found to be a substrate favouring the deposition of calcite crystals from stable supersaturated solutions at pH 8.50 and at 25°C.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the tree-ring responses of Pinus halepensis subsp. brutia trees to a 30-year observation period and conclude that the most likely cause of tree mortality is chronic depletion of deeper moisture pools and hydraulic failure rather than C starvation.

25 Mar 2004TL;DR: A method for modelling the evolution of multiple flights from the point of view of an air traffic controller is developed, which consists of many instances of flights, each with different aircraft dynamics, flight plan and flight management system.
Abstract: A method for modelling the evolution of multiple flights from the point of view of an air traffic controller is developed The model is multi-agent, hybrid and stochastic It consists of many instances of flights, each with different aircraft dynamics, flight plan and flight management system The motions of different flights are coupled through the effect of the wind, which is modelled as a random field Estimates of the statistical properties of the wind field (variance and spatio-temporal correlation structure) are extracted from publicly available weather data The model is coded in Java, so that it can be simulated to generate realistic data for validating conflict detection and resolution algorithms

TL;DR: A review of full and pilot-scale biological filters that have been used for combined or simultaneous biological removal, as well as factors and conditions that were found to affect the process are presented in this article.
Abstract: Ammonium, and trace metals such as iron and manganese are common inorganic pollutants present in waters. Several surface and groundwaters contain natural or increased concentrations of these pollutants that are observed either isolated or in pairs, or all three together. Although several processes have been established for the biological removal of one of the above-mentioned pollutants, only recently have important studies been performed on the efficient and cost-effective simultaneous biological removal of two or more substances. This paper reviews the variety of full- and pilot-scale biological filters that have been used for combined or simultaneous biological removal, as well as factors and conditions that were found to affect the process. The main results regarding research progress on combined or simultaneous biological removal are evaluated. Finally, the kinetic models and simulation approaches used are discussed. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry

30 Aug 2005TL;DR: This paper proposes the live demonstration of a prototype of MINERVA, a novel P2P Web search engine layered on top of a DHT-based overlay network that connects an a-priori unlimited number of peers that maintains a personal local database and a local search facility.
Abstract: This paper proposes the live demonstration of a prototype of MINERVA, a novel P2P Web search engine. The search engine is layered on top of a DHT-based overlay network that connects an a-priori unlimited number of peers, each of which maintains a personal local database and a local search facility. Each peer posts a small amount of metadata to a physically distributed directory that is used to efficiently select promising peers from across the peer population that can best locally execute a query. The proposed demonstration serves as a proof of concept for P2P Web search by deploying the project on standard notebook PCs and also invites everybody to join the network by instantly installing a small piece of software from a USB memory stick.
