Abstract: The basic equations are derived which describe the propagation of an electromagnetic field in a fluctuating laser-active medium. The well-known methods of Langevinequations and master-equation for a few discrete modes are generalized to meet also the case of a radiation field with continuous spectrum. The medium is described by two-level atoms which are embedded in a merely passive solid matrix and homogeneously distributed over space. They have an inversion which is kept constant by an externally applied pump. The atomic line may be homogeneously or inhomogeneously broadened. We obtain a complete set of partial differential equations for the field operators with damping terms and fluctuating forces homogeneously distributed over the material. The telegraph equation with a fluctuating force occurs as a special case. After the exact elimination of the atomic variables we obtain a nonlinear field equation for the radiation field alone. By means of a pseudo-Hamiltonian and by a simple one-dimensional example we show that in a certain sense there exists a close formal analogy between the present theory and the theory of an interacting Bose gas. The characteristic differences between the two theories are also discussed. We find, that there occurs a phase transition of the radiation field because above a certain threshold of the pump the photons condense into a single mode and establish an “offdiagonal-long-range order”. The amplitude fluctuations and the phase fluctuations, which restore the broken phase symmetry, are calculated in detail. A new condition for the occurrence of undamped spiking (pulse formation) for a continuum of modes is derived.

Abstract: A procedure for digital image correlation is described which is based on least squares window matching. The immediate aim is high precision parallax assessment, point transfer, and point measurement. Experiments and theory have confirmed the high accuracy potential of the method. By implementation of charge coupled device (CCD) video cameras in an analytical plotter, an experimental hardware and software configuration has been established with which the operational on line application of digital image correlation for conventional photogrammetric measuring tasks can be tested. First results of calibration and performance of the system are presented. They allow optimistic conclusions as to the further development and practical application of digital image processing in photogrammetry.

Abstract: An automatic procedure for the generation of potential energy surfaces based on high level ab initio calculations is described. It allows us to determine the vibrational wave functions for molecules of up to ten atoms. Speedups in computer time of about four orders of magnitude in comparison to standard implementations were achieved. Effects due to introduced approximations—within the computation of the potential—on fundamental modes obtained from vibrational self-consistent field and vibrational configuration interaction calculations are discussed. Benchmark calculations are provided for formaldehyde and 1,2,5-oxadiazole (furazan).

Abstract: The catastrophic floods recently occurring in Europe warn of the critical need forhydrologic data on floods over long-time scales. Palaeoflood techniques provideinformation on hydrologic variability and extreme floods over long-time intervals(100 to 10,000 yr) and may be used in combination with historical flood data (last1,000 yr) and the gauge record (last 30–50 yr). In this paper, advantages anduncertainties related to the reconstruction of palaeofloods in different geomorphologicalsettings and historical floods using different documentary sources are described.Systematic and non-systematic data can be combined in the flood frequency analysisusing different methods for the adjustment of distribution functions. Technical toolsintegrating multidisciplinary approaches (geologic, historical, hydraulic and statistical)on extreme flood risk assessment are discussed. A discussion on the potential theoreticalbases for solving the problem of dealing with non-systematic and non-stationary data ispresented. This methodology is being developed using new methodological approachesapplied to European countries as a part of a European Commission funded project (SPHERE).
